Sorry, MikeT, you can't make generalizations. My husband has great legs and looks just fine in shorts.

If that's not for you, that's fine, but don't paint everyone with the same brush.

A 40 y.o. fit man in shorts looks better, IMO, than a 18 y.o. kid whose very overweight.

Some women don't feel comfortable showing their arms, some do. If their arms are in shape, who is to say there is an age cutoff?

And Mike - just how do you know that MM doesn't look smashing in his cargo shorts?

Perhaps MM and MikeT can forward pics of their legs and we can compare?

There's also a big difference b/t Abercrombie cargos and Theory cargos. Just saying.

My dh is over 30 and wears cargo shorts regularly (not the ones that go below your knees like a teenager, but regular cargo shorts) and looks great in them. I cannot imagine wearing "chinos" on a hot day unless you are going somewhere that requires nicer dress. Do people even still use the word "chinos?" That was what my mom called them when I was in 8th grade! MikeT, if that what you are comfortable in, so be it, but I'd rather have my dh with his nice tan well muscled legs in cargo shorts any day!!

Personally, I think you should wear what you feel good in as long as you aren't exposing something you shouldn't! If some local looks at you with disdain because you don't meet their fashion criteria, so what? It is their problem for being so judgmental - there shouldn't be a dress code for wandering city streets.

Clean lines on a pair of capris, are the most flattering. At least on my 50+ size 10/12 self.

I find it highly amusing that a VISITOR to New York City tells actual residents what they should or shouldn't wear. Manhattan is NOT DC. You will see anything and everything in NYC, including drag queens with pink hair on the subway during rush hour.

Believe me, no one cares what you wear. Manhattanites only care how they look; they couldn't care less about you, sweetie darling.

Marginal, did you actually interpret my post to be telling RESIDENTS what to wear in NYC? This is a travel forum and I assumed that residents would not even consider using it for clothing advice. I was just remarking that in the heat and humidity, one style of attire stood out as looking cool and fresh. I wished that I had brought some sundresses; it hadn't even crossed my mind. Had someone told me this before my trip, I would have been grateful. That's all.

I thought they were only old man pants if the man wore the waist up to his arm pits.

No one in the city looks fresh after emerging from the 125 degree subway on a hot humid day!

Flip flops in the city make your feet filthy and should only be worn to get a pedicure. They also have absolutely no support. I don't get why everyone wears them.

Those women looking fresh ride in cabs and/or don't work

I wear flip flops to and from work b/c they don't take up much room in my bag, are super comfortable, and I can just throw them on. My feet don't get dirty in the course of my commute. Lots of young ladies keep their stashes of work shoes under their desk

Chinos include the whole array of pants made up of a certain fabric. Khakis are a color, not a type of pant.

ANYWAY . . . the whole question of what people can wear and should wear and will wear is subjective, of course. Just because you see people dressed a certain way in New York or DC or Paris doesn't meant that the look is good. So just because some 50yo man wears cargo shorts designed for 20yos around NYC doesn't mean it's a good look or that others should emulate it.

I see tourists in DC at places like the Capitol, the Supreme Court, and lined up at the White House looking like they are dressed to go to Six Flags or for a backyard BBQ. There's different looks for different places and if you are going to be going to museums or for lunch somewhere other than fast food in NYC, you shouldn't like you are lined up for the roller coaster at Six Flags or the Ozark Jamboree.

LOL, so funny that you would phrase it that way...but for my influence, DH would do that. Our summer vacation in 2005 was Disneyworld. Our summer vacation in 2006 was Rome, Florence and Venice. If I would not have stopped him, my husband would have packed exactly the same clothes for Rome that he did for WDW. Literally. I guess some people have a single idea of "vacation clothes."

On a side note,

I find it a friendly practice to acknowledge those that read trip reports and offer support. Especially when you've had a family member recognized on TV after offering suggestions to the areas of you choice.

Just a friendly suggestion, not for me but the others who have invested time and encouragement.

I've been trying to get the rest of my trip report posted today. I started my trip report with thanks and have thanked folks for their suggestions multiple times thoughout. Sorry that I haven't yet responded to your specific post. Yeah, red heads get a lot of attention; cool if you saw my daughter!!!!!!

I wish I had the encyclopedic memory of screen names the way some of you do. So many of the things we did and saw were due to suggestions on this board....I could just annotate the whole trip report with "(Thanks kealalani!)" or whatever. I don't have that kind of memory, but I hope people recognize their suggestions and are pleased that I followed them. And for every suggestion we did follow, there are several more in my materials that I wanted to follow if I had had the time.

Oh mp, I hope I didn't interupt your flow!!! It really is a great report, and so helpful!!! Just notice it wasn't very interactive, that's all! Please continue. I apologize if I made this uncomfortable, but wanted to ask a question.....
