Alcatraz tour
What is the best time of day for the Alcatraz tour. I understand there is alot of fog during certain times of the day. If you only had time for one tour would you do the day or night tour? We will be going the end of September.

I am topping a discussion I had on this subject before our trip in late July. We went first thing in the morning and it was great - not too crowded until other boats started arriving.
Oh, and be sure to book ahead and do the audio tour it's brilliant.

mcfarms, we'll be in SF in early October; also going to Alcatraz. Here is the link to book online: http://www.blueandgoldfleet.com/
We booked the 9:30am tour, to avoid the biggest crowds (we hope). Enjoy yourselves!

Sorry, for some reason I can't send this message to the top of the board. If you search in this forum under 'Alcatraz - what time of day?' you should find it. Lot's of useful advice form other good Fodorites!

We took the first boat of the day, which I would highly recommend. We had gorgeous weather and got great photos before the hundreds of other tourists arrived.
I would do the first boat of the day, or the night tour. We plan to take the night tour when we return!
