alaska to whitehorse in Fall

We(wife and self) have a quote for one way car rental in late August from Anchorage to Whitehorse or early September from Whitehorse to Anchorage.

We had a memorable trip to Alaska in July 2010 and visited Juneau,Gustavus,Yakutat,Denali,Matanuska,Whittier and Kenai Fjords.

Manly interested in scenery, wildlife and see the northern lights if possible.have given myself 7 days of driving time.

I know some of you have done it and hence want to know the main highlights and suggested route, accommodation locations. We are not into camping or hiking.

We also have the option of traveling only the Dempster highway for a week.

Car rental is from Go North.

I had to look up the Dempster Highway. http://www.yukoninfo.com/region/dempster-highway/
Why are you planning a one way trip from Alaska into Canada?
You are no more likely to see the northern lights in the Yukon than north of Fairbanks IMO.
Why not drive the Dalton Highway and stay in the US?

ih, "doing the Dempster" is on hubby's bucket list. Your reference to Go North was very helpful for me; thank you for that. Their suggested itineraries (it DOES take a long time to really do these trips) and deals on one way trips make it within the realm of possibility for us.

I wish I could actually provide you with helpful information in return.

Unless you can get all the way to Inuvik and back I'd probably skip the Dempster, which passes through some pretty desolate landscapes (not many mountains) most of the way.

Instead I'd do the Anchorage - Whitehorse August route via the Top of the World Highway (aka Taylor Hwy) and Dawson. The TOTW Highway is beautiful and Dawson is fascinating and a hoot. You'll get good autumn colo(u)r in August at elevation but the days won't be as short as later; a week can make a big difference at those latitudes.

If you didn't cover it in your previous trip, I'd take the Glenn Hwy from Anchorage to Glennallen, then do a short detour south on the Richardson Hwy to Thompson Pass on the road to Valdez; it's one of the most beautiful roads in Alaska and indeed North America in that area. Then go back to Glennallen and continue on to Tetlin Jct. for the TOTW Highway and the road to Chicken. Cross over into Canada and down to the Yukon ferry into Dawson.

I'd allow three days to Dawson, two days thereabouts, one of which with a drive up the Klondike Valley, and a day to Whitehorse. If you're allowed, you could detour down to Skagway before dropping the vehicle in Whitehorse.

A copy of The Milepost will help on this drive.
