We're headed to a wedding in Vancouver in late October. We would love to head to Alaska either before or after. Don't mind the cold, but is it too dark? Anyone know how many hours of light at this point? Are tours still running at this point, things to do? Thanks!

I think the problem you would have would be very cold weather and most things to see and do would be shut down. I think May, June or early September would be a much better time for this trip.

Went in Oct and it did nothing but rain. The good thing is maybe you will see the northern lights. (we did)

I worked in Anchorage for 2 months in 2002. Tourist season in Alaska officially ends Sept. 15, and by October 1, the only people up there are locals. Few, if any, tours run after Sept, 15, and they are all shut down by October 1. There starts to be snow in the high country after October 1, and by Halloween, it is usually snowy in Anchorage.

Christie is right. We spent the last two weeks of September in Alaska a few years ago, and although everything we wanted to see was open (with NO tourists), by the end of the month it was getting quite cold and things were really closing up.

It will likely be rainy and cold in Oct and snowy and COLD in Nov.. The days aren't really short in Oct and even early nov. But they start getting shorter fast at that point.

And no tourist sites of any kind will be open . . . .
