Airport Security Question

I appreciate in advance any help for my question. My wife has to give herself injections, which of course requires syringes and needles. We are going to be travelling (domestically) in about 2 weeks. Question is, will we have problems if she carries the syringes in her carryon?
Thanks.

I would say yes... and I absolutely would call the airline to see the best way to handle this!

Have a letter from her doctor with you to explain why you have that equipment. Also, the airline may allow you to pack it. Ciao

I would definitely get a letter from your wife's doctor to carry with you, and notify the airline in advance as well.

My mother and her husband had problems going from NYC to Florida last week because of a teeny tiny manicure kit (she should have known better, but forgot about it as she's so used to it being in her purse). The kit was confiscated and thrown in the rubbish bin as "contraband". They wouldn't allow her to write an address label to have the kit mailed back to her home. She didn't dispute that she shouldn't have it on board, but they insisted on throwing it away. Then my parents' boarding passes were flagged so they were further searched down the line. My stepfather had to loosen his belt buckle, unzip his pants, practically get undressed - he's 76 years of age. They had to show their drivers licenses as ID. A big hassle. The funny thing is, he was issued a boarding pass under another passenger's name, which was not discovered until they were ready to board the plane! The agent said, how did you get all this way with someone else's boarding pass? What a unit! But I rant.

At any rate, I'm sure there are plenty of other passengers like your wife who have medical conditions that necessitate the use of syringes and there must be some kind of provision made for these passengers. One hopes.

Carrying syringes is much more common than you might think - there ara a lot of diabetics. The letter from the doctor is not a bad idea, but at least have a copy of the prescription and be sure that the injectable medication has the orginal pharmacy label with your wife's name, and carry only as many syringes as your are likely to need during the time of the flight, plus a couple extra in case your bags get misdirected.

Yes you might have problems. I take care of patients with diabetes and today I wrote some letters for a few who were traveling for Thanksgiving. The agency where they bought their tickets suggested they get letters from their doctors. I saved these in my computer, I have a feeling I'll be writing more of them in the future. If your doctor doesn't have the time, he can use one of his prescription pads with his/her name on it, and write briefly your wifes' condition and the supplies she needs to carry.
