Airline and leg room

We used TWA last year to travel from London Gatwick to Orlando(MCO),it was a scheduled flight, although it wasn't direct(we had to stop at St Louis). We thought it was good value at around £234 each(including tax), and I thought there was more legroom than on B.A. flights.

TWA routes most of their flights through St. Louis. If you're flying TW from Miami to New Orleans, for example, you have to make a pit stop in St. Louis. I flew Eastern in their dying days from San Francisco to Houston...via Atlanta! Sometimes a weird routing=cheaper fare!

I'm presuming you're travelling from the UK. Charter airlines to the US offer only 29" of seat pitch. If your over 6ft tall forget it, as returning to the UK for 7hrs plus is overnight and will be painfull. Schedule airlines offer anything from 31"-34" depending on aircraft type and airline. I note from a previous post Air New Zealand is 34" but only fly from Heathrow to Los Angeles. American Airlines have a program underway converting all their "coach" (economy) class to 34" seat pitch, however this is not scheduled to be completed until well into 2001. It does not follow that the bigger the plane the more leg room. You will find the Boeing 777 offers slightly more space than the 747. Not because they give more seat pitch, but because the seats are slightly wider.
Some charter airlines offer a "premium service" with extra leg room, free drinks etc, for a small additional charge (£150). However these sell out fast and will probably not be available for flight only deals.
If your flying from London or the South East your choice is much wider than flying from say the North West. Regional departures will frequently require a connecting flight and the choice of airlines is limited.
Flying schedule over charter usually means free drinks, better food, and more flexiblity.
The choice of airline therefore may not be which is the best but which suites your needs best. If your thinking of travelling from Manchester you will be limited to American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Continental Airlines, Air Canada, British Airways, US Airways. Plus numerous charters to Florida and other airlines offering connecting services (eg Lufthansa via Frankfurt or KLM via Amsterdam). If your flying form London the list is much larger and the non-stop routes more comprehensive.
