my husband (Causian) spent 6 months on the Big Island and was shocked at the racism he encountered...so yes, it does exist and yes, it is directed at anyone who is non-native.

Louise, the Black population here is somewhere at 2% which is why you don't see many of them in Hawaii. In my opinion, there is less respect for people who don't respect the culture and the land, than for people of specific races. If you come to Hawaii and truly appreciate it, you will be appreciated in return!

The reality seems to be that in general travelers (tourists) tend to be treated well most places they go; living in a place and engaging in day-to-day business may be completely different, depending on where you are and who you are. People in the tourism industry and the "hospitality" professions tend to look at visitors and see customers, and customers are their bread and butter.
