affinia hotels
I am considering a trip to new york city on labour day week end...september 4/5/6th.
We are 4 adults on a budget (I am paying). I looked at the Shelburne hotel....for a one bedroom, and also the Plaza fifty.....I read that they had extensive renovations.
I am getting a decent price with quicbooks....
any advice or other suggestions???

Welcome yannjack. Not sure what advice or suggestions you're looking for. Since you haven't mentioned what the price is I'll just offer some more info.
All the Affinia hotels get good reviews. Check tripadvisor for more input. Here's the URL for reviews on the Plaza Fifty there
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev..._New_York.html
Double check that there's not a better deal on the affiniahotels.com website. Look at the area on their website for special offers or something like that. People have reported here getting a grandparents deal without being grandparents.
There are a number of other suite hotels besides the affinia group. People have reported good things about the San Carlos which is a new renovation of an old hotel called the Summit. It's around Lexington and 52 so in a similar location to Plaza Fifty.
The Salisbury is another suite hotel on west 57th st that has 2 bedroom suites (affinia does too in some of their properties but people have reported they're more expensive than 2 one bedrooms).
I also recently read (by accident) about a hotel called the Metro. The reviews on tripadvisor talk about 2 bedroom suites. It's near Macy's and the Empire State building (not a great location, but not terrible.)
What would your ideal accomodation be?

The Kimberly is another good suite hotel in the east 50's. The Mayflower Hotel on Central Park West will be closing soon (according to another Fodorite's recent post) but has some suites. The furnishings are a bit shabby from reports but the park views are great.
Make sure you know what the total cost is for whatever you book before committing. Expedia has the Shelburne listed for $184/night for a one bedroom suite for your dates but when you go to "book it" you get an extra $40/night charge for "an extra person" plus tax. It brings the 3 night total to $799.94.

I found a terrific promotion with american express for the affinia hotels. I booked the Affinia Dumont at 208$ for a one bedroom suite instead of 368$.

I have had several great experiences with Affina when they were Manhattan East Suite Hotels and would highly recommend them.
I love the location of the Shelbourne. Being that they are suites with a kitchen and in an actual neighborhood, it gives you a little feel of being a New Yorker. Look for the Sunday flea market in Murray Hill. The Cuban Embassy is next door and it is very close to the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Grand Central, and there is a subway stop very close by. Two blocks I think.
