Advise needed on lodging flexibility in July/August in Alaska
My wife and I hope to spend about 3 weeks in Alaska in July/early-August. I was hoping that we could have a flexible agenda and spend more time where we found most interest. But is that realistic? Is it possible to make lodging reservatons "on the fly". B&Bs are preferable, but maybe even they require reservations long in advance? Your advise in this regard will sure be helpful and certainly appreciated. Thanks, Jim

During the first week of August 2001 we were able to find a room literally at the last minute in Seward. It was late in the afternoon and it didn't dawn on us that we should have called ahead when we made a spur of the moment decision to visit. It wasn't the greatest room but it was clean and in a decent location. It was mid-week though. We aren't fussy and can be flexible but we probably would have done much better to have made reservations in advance.

In July and August you will not find availability with B&B's. You need to book in advance. I can understand your wanting flexability but get a copy of THE MILEPOST- try your library- also take out Alaska travel books. There are SO FEW roads in Alaska that you can get a good idea of your interest and time needed in an area and then continue on. With 3 weeks you can easily make the big "loop". Ball park- 2-3 days in Anchorage, 1 Talkeetna, 2-3 Denali Park 2-3 Fairbanks. 2-3 Copper Center (with side trip to Kennicott??) 2 Valdez, ferry to Whittier, 2 in Seward, 2 Homer, double back and 2 hours from Anchorage- glacier hike with MICA if of interest???

Just type in city and check B&B's, e-mail to check for vacancies.I just reserved for June trip, worked great. Also, type in Alaska B&B and you will find many Chamber Of Commerces, etc. My understanding is that many cancellations take place before deposit is forfeited. Ex: Seward,Ak b&b.

July and August are the busiet times for Alaska, as I am sure you know. I would definitely book ahead if you can,
especially in the popular places like Anchorage, Denali, Kenai peninsula. Prices are at a premium and so are accommodations. I think it would be risky to try to book on the fly. risking
