Advice Nashville to Washington D.C please!
Hi!
My friend and I have hired a campervan and we will be starting off in LA and eventually ending up in New York. We've loosely planned most of the route but we're stuck on the Nashville to Washington D.C part. It will be December by the time we get to there so obviously not going to be great weather. What would be the best route to get us from Nashville to Washington taking in to consideration the time of year?
Thanks!
Lizzie

I don't think weather will be particularly notable. We don't get a lot of snow that time of year, but of course, anything is possible. Seems like I40 would be your route.
You could go north on I81 west of Knoxville, or continue on 40 and stop in Asheville and Biltmore House, and then on to Winston Salem for some nice sightseeing, particularly in December. Old Salem will be decorated for christmas with wonderful music also. And be sure to stop at the Winkler Bakery for Moravian sugar cake and thin thin thin Moravian sugar and ginger cookies.
Then you could go on up I95 to DC.

Thanks everyone, that's great! Well we pick up the campervan on Tuesday (21st Nov)!in LA. We go to Vegas for 2 nights, then the Grand Canyon for a night then down to Texas across to New Orleans and then up to Nashville. We have to drop the van off in New York on the 23rd December!

lizzieS, I just saw this. My DH and I did a 12-14 hour trip from the DC area to Western Kentucky for the Christmas holidays. From our experiences, I suggest you really pay attention to the weather forecasts. In general, the southern route through Knoxville is better in the winter. If there are icy conditions, go with care because snow/ice removal is not needed as much in the south.
We always hit the worst weather in Western Maryland on the way back. And it was dark by the time we hit Charleston, WV.
Others need to weigh in about this, but we got over to Route 95 instead of 81 when we could. 81 seemed more crowded with big trucks. I agree with Gretchen but again, watch weather as Asheville is in the mountains.
Have a fantastic time!
