Activities in Kenai, Alaska area

My husband and I will be on a Princess Cruise and land tour this month. We have planned some excursions but failed to note until now that we have most of an afternoon in Kenai at leisure (then the next day, we get on the boat tour of Kenai National Park). We will be staying at the Kenai Princess Lodge. Unfortunately, the excursions are pretty much filled up that are offered by Princess (at least as far as our interests). Has anyone stayed at this lodge and used transportation and/or tour companies independent of what the lodge offers? Thank you in advance.

Check google maps. You are almost 59 miles from the town of Kenai (1 hour 21 minute drive). I'm pretty sure when you get on the boat, it will be in Seward on the other side of the Kenai Peninsula from Kenai. One of the activities listed is a visit to Seward but keep in mind the boat tour says it's a 3 hour r/t drive. If you have time to explore Seward after the boat trip you wouldn't need the extra visit but if you don't have explore time, it's too bad to miss. Some nice shops. The aquarium. Considering the travel time that would be 2 days in a row, an afternoon just to relax and read might not be too bad. The town of Kenai is very suburban and so is neighboring Soldotna. Doesn't look like the lodge offers any excursions to those towns.

Maybe check for some sort of fishing or float trip on the Kenai River. Maybe call the lodge and see what there is to offer. I believe the lodge is in Cooper Landing. Google for what is offered in that area. You want to look for activities out of Cooper Landing or Seward. The town of Kenai is in the wrong direction and Soldotna is not very exciting.

You will be on the Kenai Peninsula, but not in the town of Kenai. The terminal port for most, if not all, of the Princess Cruises in Alaska is Whittier, which is at the very northeast corner of the peninsula, closer to Anchorage. The boat trip to Kenai Fjords National Park probably leaves from Seward, which is to the southeast. If you can splurge, as spirobulldog points out, a float plane excursion will be unforgettable. Closer by, fishing and float trips are also available from local outfitters near the Kenai Princess Lodge. Spectacular sightseeing will be available wherever you turn! Have a great trip!

That area is beautiful. If you don't go fishing, it looks like a great place to hike and just enjoy the scenery.
