Accomodations Miami
Hi
Arriving in Miami March 24th for the first time. We need a one night stay before heading down to the Keys the following morning. We are flying in fairly late from Seattle (10pm) and are renting a car from Alamo which is 5 miles from the airport. Can someone advice me as to where I should be looking for a hotel based on convenience? We've never been, are completely unfamiliar with Miami and want it to be as low stress as possible (I have visions of us exhausted, driving in circles, getting lost etc!). I assume we will shuttle to Alamo so we'll be going from there. Also, what are the unsafe areas to avoid?? Thanks for any info or input!

Just about every hotel/motel chain has 1 or more locations within a few miles of the airport and many are probably within close proximity to the Alamo rental office.
Check the websites for the chains you are most familar with (put in Miami Airport) and pick one that is close to Alamo's office. You can also go to www.miami.mia.com for a comprehensive list of area hotels.
Another suggestion is to spend your first night at the airport in the hotel located in Terminal E (especially convenient if you are arriving on American Airlines) and then take the Alamo Shuttle bus to the car rental office the next morning. You can get rate information and availability at the hotel's web-site www.miahotel.com .

My advice.
Pick up your rental car and head for the Florida Turnpike. I think the artery is 836 but check mapquest.
Take the short drive to Florida City and stay at The Hampton Inn in Florida City. The Hampton Inn is just down the road from Card Sound Road which is the road you want to take into the keys not US1.
Florida City for two reasons: you don't have to dick around on a Friday night trying to find your motel in Miami after a long flight and you don't have to dick around on a Saturday morning trying to get out of Miami to beat the Saturday morning Florida keys traffic.
Even if you wait until as late as 10AM to leave Florida City, you'll still have a jump on the rest of the South Florida traffic into the keys.

Marriott has several of its hotels (Courtyard; Fairfield; Marriott) within spitting distance of the airport and they all have airport shuttles. (They are on LeJeune Road.) I would not try to navigate unfamiliar roadways at night. Take the shuttle to the hotel and then pick up your car in the morning. You'll have a lovely drive to the Keys in the daylight.

If you are still looking for something nearer the airport, I can recommend Amerisuites, which is a pretty straight shot from the airport and would take about fifteen minutes to get to with no traffic.
In staying at various places near MIA over the years I have found that it seems safer to be on the west side of Palmetto Expressway, rather than on the east side (airport side). I've done both and much prefer to be on the west side of the Palmetto these days. The area is nicer and there are more dining options, etc.
