A week in New York

Back in Big Apple for "our usual spring week" in NY.
This year , it was latter than other years, end of May.
We flight early from Paris(8'30 am) and so land at 10 am at JFK.
We were at hotel at 11'30 and have to wait our room but we know before(we preferr this early arrival as it allows a whole half day in NY...).
Hotel is FLATOTEL : not a luxurious hotel but location(135 west 52nd street between 6th and 7th avenue) is nice and the rooms are large.
This year we reserve a double bedroom suite. Our daughter is 18 years old and so parents and daughter need privacy..
The first night we had the 2603, not really for me a double BR suite : one of the room is like an "aquarium", with glass walls in the middle of what was an appartment(Flatotel was before an hotel an appartmen's building..).
I "complain" gently and for the other nigfhts wa had 3604 and 3602 : so 2 rooms, 2 bathrooms and a large living/dining rooms and a kitchenette : lot of space...
We like the minimalist decoration and the furnitures.
Saturday, May,the 19th :
We let our luggage at hotel and walk for lunch not too far : Rosy O'Grady on the 7th avenue ; Anny and Salome want Caesar salad and crabe cakes...They got them and I'd Shrimp Cocktail and a steak. Not so bad for what it is in the middle of hotels, not far from Times Square. It's not high culinary art but it's just what you can expect...
Weather was nice and so we eta on terrasse with the streets noise to be really in NY.
Afterthat, walk to Tiffany : we were later in NY because it was for Anny's Birthday-50- and so special event needs special present. We find what she wants after one hour of hesitation but it's a ...secret!!
Before going back to Hotel, a detour by Manolo Blahnik's store(54th street) for some lady's shopping...
We go in room, didn't emptied totally the luggage as we'd to change the day after and finnaly got a ...shower!
We stay to relax one hour and direction BBKing Blues as we have tickets for the Brian McKnight's show.
Meal is like all the clubs : basic, classic, not too lipidic...Show was fine...
Then, back to hotel and night....

Sunday, May the 20th.
Not too soon to wake up, despite the jetlag.
Anny and I walk to Fluffy's on the 7th.Cheap and just what you want : sunny side up egg and bacon, crispy and lipidic...
Back to room with a lemon ice pound cake for Salome. I used the exercise room at the 46th floor: I run for 20 mn .
Then the flea market on Columbus. Weather was fine, perhaps a little too hot, and this year market was good : some vintage clothes fore Salome, Bakelite bracelet for Anny, some Rockwell NY evening post et old Coke Add for Erik.
We decide to walk to our brunch location : Hundred Acres in the village, after having done a detour via Flatotel to let what we bought at the market.
Hundred Acres was a little disappointing : location is nice, but despite the fact we reserve early in advance, and that i send a mail asking for a outdoor sitting -weather depending-precising we arrive the day before from France- we have been on an table in the front room...perhaps because we were not as others known by the "welcoming girl"...It will not be the last time during the sejour that we found ourselves not "wellcome"...Brunch was not bad for the salty part(scramble eggs, smoked fish,..) but the "sugar" part was disppointed.
Nice choice of beers and wine by the glass. So not bad but not as good than expected.
We then walk in Soho/Chelsea trying for Anny/Salome to find some clothes to shop, but nothing really original and cheap this year and so we do some economies this day.
We decide to walk back by the 5th avenue the village.
Short stop at Flatotel and diner at PJ Clarkes at "Lincoln Center". Not so typic than the original, but what you eat is the same : Caesar salad, asparagus, Corned Beef, pudding. No surprise, nice service and back to sleep.

Before our diner at PJ, we tried to have a drink at the bar in mandarin hotel at their upper floor. We were explained that we have to wait because there was a reception and half of the bar/restaurant was reserved, but there was only one couple before us and so we wait...and we wait...and we wait...
The couple had a table but we wait and wait...seeing some people arriving by other doors and accompanied to inoccupied tables...(not in the reserved part for reception)
When I request I was told that they reserve!!!(no reservation allowed she said to us before...).
Perhaps they give som $$ to have their tables...It was difficult to have the name of the "responsable"(she first refuse to give it...) but I got it and do a written complain...

Monday, May the 21st
Weather was so so...
We walk in Rockfeller Center (the "patios" : there are some patios with fountain, some garden in RCF center ) and arrive at the MOMA : 100 m of queue to wait and so we decide first to renonce .
Before , I decide to try something : I go to the member desk and ask if it was possible to subscribe and if I was allowed to have some guests to visit...It was possible and the price for guest is 5 $/guest . So for 3 : $70 for membership and 2 x $5 as I've 2 guests : $ 80(normal price : $25 x 3 = $75)and no wait...
I think the $5 supplement worth... and you got an escompt card for the shop(20 %...).
So for tourists and at minimum 3, for some few more $, no wait and you are in the museum.
We see the Cindy Sherman exposition : interesting for me as I like photographs and their work...
Not interesting for the whole exposition for Anny and Salome. The part on the mode's work is nice, the work on the portraits also but some other works are for me without interest.
We take a look to some other "rooms" we didn't visit for a while(Matisse, Van Gogh,..) and the design part and
back to streets..
Anny saw on a revue at Flatotel that the shoe's department at Begdorf/Goodman's was organised with some antics and we decide to visit it...Worth the look...The Luxe at its maximum : only designers(J.Choo, Lauboutin, Blahnick, Chanel, Vivier,...), no disorder, quiet and calm...but you're not "harassed" by the personn working here : you take a look and ask if you want...
Weather continue to be variable and so, direction Upper East Side. Salome want a burger : Jackson Hole, 232 east 64th street. Burger for Salome and I, salad for Anny, some fries and coleslaw, light beer and expresso and we were ready to continue.
We walk "up" by Madison to go to Lisa Pery's store and Gagosian Gallery..Disappointment for both..Gallery is not as accessible than last year and didn't give wish to visit it...and the store is only one room with only few expensive models , far from what is on the website.
Afterthat, we come back to Flatotel by Lexington and Anny/Salome do some visits to Niketown, Ann Taylor's store, Aldo's shoes in way to Flatotel and around.
We relax one hour before taking a taxi to River Cafe : this day was Anny's birthday and so a special diner.
Champagne, salad for Salome and 2 smoked trout(Anny/Erik) and the Duck(Salome),Rocklobster(Anny), Maine Lobster(Erik), Brooklyn bridge Chocolate for the ladies, Souffle for me.
It was at least 12 years we have not been to River Cafe and the surprise was good : service was perfect, meal of good quality and the price is not so high...
Back by taxi as the weather was always foggy...and a good sleep!!

From Laboutin to Aldo's - you certainly hit it all shoe-wise!
