Loved your report Starrs, we visited Fallingwater and Kentuck Nob a few years ago and this reminded us of what a fun trip we had. Glad you had such a fun time too.

Great report, Jo! I'd love to see Fallingwater and the Flight 93 Memorial one day. Had no idea the ribbon outlet (!!!) or Kentucky Nob existed. Yes, I have to go there now, too. Glad you enjoyed a great trip, you fit a lot in!

Thanks, AMC. Your photos of the cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin really inspired me the day before this trip. Catching the blossoms this late in April, and seeing the FDR and MLK memorials really made the trip magical.

Starrs - yes, I have been there to visit. We can't determine exactly what part of the estate was our family farm because all the landmarks used in the deed to describe the land boundaries no longer exist and all my family that were alive at the time the land was in the family have passed away. I do have mail sent to my grandmother addressed simply Rural Route, Bear Run, PA.

I enjoyed your report. We had a nice visit to Fallingwater, combined with a few days' vacation in Pittsburg, many years ago. We found lots of fun things to do with the kids and had a great time.

Starrs - Thank you but I don't think that will work. The Kaufmann's bought a number of small farms and combined them into a fairly large holding. With the absence of markers used to describe boundaries in the deeds, unless someone finds an old plat map, I doubt if there is any way to determine which parcels were where. Both the PA Conservency people and I tried without success.

I didn't mean actually FIND it, but imagine where the farm could have been.

The area is really lovely. Altho I have never made it to Falling Water, I have spent lots of time in that area because it is close to all of DH's family.

In the Laurel Highlands, there are 2 nice resorts - Seven Springs and Hidden Valley. We skied Hidden Valley years ago and have gone to Seven Springs for wine events and just fun days with the boys.

We also spent 4 days at Nemacolin. Great place. My MIL and I took advantage of the spa and DH and boys did the zip line, golf, and fly fishing. It was owned by Joe Hardy (I guess the family sill owns it), who was the founder of 84 Lumber company. The company was named after the town of Eighty-Four, PA - where my DH grew up and where Mr. Hardy was a client of my MIL's at her bank. Upon her retirement, Mr Hardy gave her a substantial gift-certificate for any restaurant at Nemacolin. It took 15 years, but she used the GC when we were there and the resort had no problems honoring them.

I know! I am shocked too. I had the P&S I bought in NYC last year in my backpack (I left the other one at home) but realized after the trip I took 100s of photos with the iPhone and just a few with the camera. It really has convinced me to use the phone as the "little camera" and I'll still take my "good phone" along when I want a lot of zoom. And thanks for the compliment - coming from you that's high praise!

How cool!... I live near Berwick, Pennsylvania, the home base for the Berwick Offray Ribbon Company. We also have an outlet store, which is always a blast to visit. It's been a while though, since I now have plenty of ribbons, bows, and curly cues to last a life time. It use to be they sold you a plastic bag for $3.00 (2 for $5.00), about 18" x 36", and whatever you could stuff in there was yours. One year for Christmas I gave my sister-in-law (who makes wrapping presents into an art form) 2 bags of bows & ribbons. She loved it!

BTW starrs, I enjoyed your trip report. I've been to Fallingwater, back in the late '70's, but have never visited Kentuck Knob. Hmmm... I see a trip out to the western part of Pennsylvania in my future.
