A Sunday in Bangor--What to do?

Because of an oversight on my part with our rental car company, we'll be spending next Sunday in Bangor. We won't have a car, but will be staying a mile away from the downtown area. We have two boys, ages 10 and 15. Any suggestions of what to do (without spending much money)? Thanks!

Was this a pre-paid rental car deal (Priceline, etc?). If not, just reserve with another rental car company.

Hmmm...not sure I understand this one...Maine is pretty crowded in summertime, are you saying that you are returning the car Sunday morning and couldn't extend another day because they are sold out? And other car companies also have no availability?

I made a reservation a long time ago for three weeks for $666 with Enterprise through Travelocity. I didn't realize that they weren't open at Sat. night or Sunday, however. We're arriving Sat. night. When I checked around with other rental car agencies by phone and by internet, I found that the price has doubled. And Priceline sent me an email saying that they can't guarantee that a rental agency through them will allow me to drive the car into Canada. Tried Hotwire, too--it's double.

So if anyone has an idea of how to get a car for $666, I'll listen. But in the meantime, I'm figuring that we'll just have to spend a day in Bangor before we head to Prince Edward Island. Any ideas of fun stuff to do there?

The Cole Transportation Museum is very interesting. There's a lot of information about the logging industry. This is more of a work vehicle collection than the fancy cars and planes you would see at the Owls Head Museum in Rockland. Check their website. Kids are free but not sure if it would be worth a cab ride for you. Have you looked for a one day rental?

If I understand this correctly you arrive Bangor Sat night but can't pick up your rental car until Monday?
Try to get a weekend rental on a car for Sat through Mon, at least you can spend Sunday at the coast, or driving up to see Moosehead or something.
P.S. Is $666 the rate with all taxes etc, or is it $222 a week? What size car do you need?

I hate to tell you this, but the Enterprise website says that your unlimited mileage is voided if you drive into Canada. You'll only get 1000 miles per week and then a hefty mileage charge.

Send an email to [email protected] your dates & times, if anyone can find you a rental anywhere near your desired rate it's them. It's not an agency you will book the car yourself. You will be asked to fill out a quick car-rental survey but it's painless. Good luck.

First of all, thanks for the info about the museum. I've looked in several travel books, and there's not much out there about Bangor.

Now, Tracy with lots of cents, thank you for your help. Clubjefftravel was very helpful, but as it turns out, the guy at the Enterprise desk told me that I can have unlimited mileage into Canada, and I'd already rented a car for Sunday on Hotwire. So I'm all good (except for the hassle of dealing with two cars). It actually works out well--we're going to spend the day in Acadia, where we'll be ending our trip as well. So if we're somewhere in Nova Scotia or Manan Island, and just can't bear to leave, we can knock off a day at the end (have planned for three days in Acadia.) Thanks again for your help.

Sounds great, glad it worked out. REcommend that you bring your insurance card/proof with you to Enterprise, as they can be sticklers aboutt trying to get you to purchase (expensive) additional insurances. If your home insurance agent tells you that you're covered, you're covered...so don't believe the Enterprise schpeel. I tell you this because you are renting for more than 15 days, and the insurance coverage provided by your Visa or Mastercard will be void (AMEX is 30 day coverage however).

Thanks for the good advice, Tracy. It turned out that I decided to use the rental that jeffclubtravel worked out after all. I'll have to swallow the $38 that I paid to Hotwire for the Sunday rental--unless anyone knows how to get Hotwire to do a refund or a certificate (?)--but it's a bigger car and I can go ahead and get it on Sat. night. So thanks again. Canada, here we come!
