A summer in California!

I'm a 21 old girl from montreal and I'll be in California with my boyfriend for all the summer. I want to know if you can help me about places to stay for maybe 2-3months? What is the best...rent an apartment or try having a good deal for few months in a hotel? Where is the best places to go and the best things to do in those places? Also, I will go there for working with a J-1 visa, where can I search for a job? Any info will be very appreciate!!

Thanks a lot!

Hi there. Will you be in Northern CA (San Fransico area) or So. CAL (Los Angeles/San Diego)? I am sure we could send you some info links, just let us know where you will be.

Hi! Thanks for your help Thyra I'll be in South California, around Los Angeles. I think LoS Angeles is too expensive to stay for my budget... it's why I would like to know which places around could be cool for me. I've heard about Long Beach, Newport, Catalina Island, Huntington Beach and Laguna Beach but I don't know a lot of things about those places.I don't know which ones can be the best for working. I hope you can help me
Thanks again!

Step 1: Get a map. Study the coastline around Los Angeles. Note the names of the towns--for instance, beach towns like Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, and Long Beach are in Los Angeles County. Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, and Laguna Beach are in Orange County. The distance along the coast from Malibu (on the north) to Capistrano Beach (on the south) is over sixty miles. It's difficult to recommend an area unless you have a vague notion of which section you'd like to be nearest...for instance, does your boyfriend need to be near a certain area?

Of the towns you mentioned, Laguna Beach and Newport will be the most expensive, then Huntington Beach, then Long Beach. Catalina a a two-hour boat ride away from Long Beach.

Step 2: After you decide on a general area, go to a good newstand or a big library and try to get copies of the two following newspapers: Los Angeles Times and Orange County Register. Within the classified ads, you will be able to judge the relative cost of renting in each community. Also, for such a short stay, you might look into older motels that rent by the week or month. You can save a lot of money that way, though finding an opening in an okay place in a beach town will be difficult during the summer months.

A couple questions:

(1) What sort of work do you do?

(2) What do you want to get out of the experience? I mean, for a few months it seems like the coastal experience would be the best. Problem is finding something for such a short term for the beach months. Have you ever thought about an exchange? Maybe someone from the So. CA coast would like to spend the summer in Montreal... Just a thought.

Hi,
thanks for your help people! I rewrite to answer your question.

First, nope my boyfriend doesn't have to be in a specific or near a specific area. We are SWAP participants (student work abroad program) so we can go anywhere in USA for work and having fun.

So, I decide to go in California but I was just don't know where it can be the best for us, it's why I ask you for more informations

About work I do, I only want a summer job in a hotel, restaurant or others like that. Thanx for the exchange idea but I can't do that cause I'm a university student and I still live at my parent's home with my 3 brothers...

Gene,
Check out

For club and entertainment/trendy misc stuff.
www.lainsider.com
Restaurants etc.
www.latimes.com
Jobs and classifieds.
They have a lot of agencies here that can find apartments, mostly you need to get a year lease, but I know that short term rentals are out there. I don't know about the rest of So. Cal, but here in Hollywood/West Hollywood there are alot of businesses looking for help. You may try the Santa Monica neighborhood since restaurants etc. really pick up down there with tourist traffic in the summer and I am sure they are looking for people.
Welcome to LA
