We recently drove from downtown LA to San Diego (admittedly on a Friday afternoon in summer) and what should take 1:45 took 3:45 -- no accidents, no construction, no narrowing of lanes, just too d**n many cars!!

We are planning on going to celebrate my 40th birthday and time away from our children! My husband looked into his airline miles and has quite a few (and he didn't tell me this earlier why????). Anyway, he has enough that if we flew into San Diego we could have airfare, hotel and car paid for with only having to pay $300 out of pocket. Very nice. Solves that problem! But that would mean staying at a hotel like the Pacific Shores, or same quality. hmmmm.......

We are staying at a friends home on Coronado right now. We have been here for 5 weeks and love being able to walk to the beach & great restaurants on a daily basis.
We have also gone on many drives around the area - wine country, Balboa Park, La Jolla, etc. We have taken the ferry to San Diego several times to attend Padres ballgames and visit Midway Museum.
(One drive back from DelMar Racetrack took us almost 2 hours - should be a 20 minute drive - no apparent problems just a lot of cars)
I would stay on Cornado again in a heartbeat.

We have actually come up with a game plan!! While I appreciate all the suggestions to the various hotels in the area, we really don't need anything fancy. We have selected the Diamond Head Inn (plus our miles will pay for it), we will be flying from Chicago to San Diego, with a layover only on the way home, and an economy rental car for 5 days..... after using my husband's miles we will be paying approx. $250 total out of pocket! WOW!!!!! I didn't realize that he had that many to be used (about 90,000) but they do add up.... Thanks again everyone for all the great suggestions!!!!!!!

We often fly out of LAX and drive from San Diego. It's pretty easy if you time it correctly.

Have fun in San Diego. The weather has been unpredictable. I don't ever remember it raining in Sept but we've had rain this week. Not much.

Let us know how the trip goes. I have considered staying at that hotel before, due to location, but haven't yet. Would love a trip report on it. It is close to all the action in PB, that is for sure. San Diego has many wonderful restaurants in all price ranges. Do you like seafood? Be sure to check out Pt. Loma seafood for a sandwich. Closer is the Fish Shop on Garnet. Also very good. One of our favorite places is Bay Park Fish Company on Moreno Blvd., not too far from PB. This is really my favorite place right now. You can sit outside. All the food I have tried is wonderful. Their poke and sushi rolls are lovely. Crab cakes too. Have fun and relax.
