A few days in San Diego

My husband and I want to spend a few days in San Diego. We are senior citizens, and we can no longer walk long distances without resting in between, but we'd like to try. We want to go to the Old Globe and other theatre. I have been told that it is a good idea to stay in the Balboa Park area. Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced, pleasant hotel in that area? Is the $200 range a possibility?

The awesome San Diego Zoo has a double decker bus that goes around the zoo. Go first thing in the morning when the animals are more active.

I would stay downtown and take a taxi up to beautiful Balboa Park. Poster maitaitom posted a report about Balboa Park that would be a big help for you. Use the searxh box above.

I think HT's suggestion to find something maybe in downtown area and take a cab to Balboa Park is great. Also nearby downtown is the Embarcadero, Little Italy, areas as well. Little Italy has some smaller boutique hotels you can google to check out.

Maitaitoms report HP mentioned is exceptional.

Restaurants near Balboa Park that I've enjoyed are Fig Tree Cafe on University near 5th Ave. Burger Lounge (same area), Bread & Cie (same area). In Balboa Park is The Prado restaurant. The ambiance is great, food is ok.

Balboa Park is about a five minute ride from the downtown areas.

There are many chain hotels in the Gadlight District. I haven't stayed on any of those, but I would check them out. Large convention hotels are Marriott and Hilton on the waterfront.
