I am a senior citizen, old fart, or whatever you want to call me.
Philosophically I believe that it is wrong to select certain groups of people for special treatment. However, I am not a fool so if I can get a bargain simply because of my age then I will take it. I have belonged to AARP for many years. My reason for belonging is strictly to take advantage of the discounts. I am almost always 100% opposed to their political agenda.
It is true that you can often beat the AARP or seniors rates. It is up to the individual to negotiate the best rate that they can. If you are not capable of doing that, then so be it.
There are certain senior discounts that are guaranteed to be lower. For example, our local Edwards Theater charges seniors $3.75 vs $7.00. Applebees, and several other restaurants give a 10-20% discount off their restaurant prices. Choice hotels ( Clarion, Quality Inn, Comfort Inn, Econolodge ) gives the best hotel discount if you make your reservations through their 800 reservations number. Their discount is 30% off the prevailing rate and not the rack rate. I have gotten their rate and then asked for the AARP discount. The discount is only 10% if you deal directly with the property.
If you are a senior then take advantage of whatever discounts that you can receive. However you have no right to believe that you are entitled to a cheaper price simply becuase of your age.
