A Couple of Old People at South Beach
I have planned a trip to Miami for my birthday in early May. I have always enjoyed the old Art Deco hotels, so we have decided to stay at the Park Central in South Beach. We are both in our forties, but the more that I read about South Beach the older I feel. Is South Beach too youth-oriented? We enjoy going to nice restaurants and nice bars for a drink, but we are not really party people. Would it have been better to stay in Fort Lauderdale?

don.......In a word....NO!! If you like Art Deco, you will be as they say in Texas, in Hog Heaven...There is absolutely no age limit in South Beach.I'm not bashing FtLauderdale by any stretch of the imagination.SoBe is truly America's Riviera.I travel there for business and pleasure. It never gets old and you dont have to be a world class partier to enjoy it.There is no way you will "stand out", it is always crowded.Go, Enjoy, Indulge and have a memorable birthday bash all your own!

My husband and I just spent a great night in SB. We are both mid 30's and thought it was all quite fun. Had a marvelous dinner at Wish and strolled around. Lots of outdoor bands (salsa, latin, jazz) on Ocean Drive. Checking out the hotels and people watching were very fun!

Huh? I'm trying to understand why you titled this post about Old people if you are in your forties.
My 85 year old mother is upset because they just moved her to a different wing in her "home". This new wing is filled with "old people" and she doesn't like it.

Have at it in South Beach. Age is a state of mind. While there is a youthful population of tourists and locals there are so many upscale places to eat and shop. Surely those twenty-somethings can't make enough money to keep all those places in business without an older crowd helping out.

My soon to be 80 y.o dad took my teenage sons there! Its hard to tell who had a better time! My husband and I love to sit at an outdoor cafe and have a glass of wine (or 2) and just people watch. There is something for everyone and you'll have a great time.

I'll make sure to let my fourtysomething year old husband know he is too old to be having all that fun we have in South Beach and must start doing something more age appropriate immediately.
Since this is his last year in his forties, I wonder what would be age appropriate?
Since this is my last year in my thirties, I'll have to go all out on my upcoming visits before my birthday.

Yeah, Go, you two need to park your scooters by the Delano pool and toast your longevity with a nice tall Metamucil. Just like I do now that I'm on the wrong side of 40...!!
don: You will have a great time in South Beach. Show those youngsters how to have a good time!

"Old" is a state of mind! My dear grandmother traveled every year from Germany to NY (she made a total of 22 trips). She was nearly blind in both eyes, but she was gutsy and didn't let anything or anyone hold her back. She was nearly 88 when she died. THAT'S exactly how I want to live.
My FIL, in his mid-eighties, refuses to let family pick him up at Heathrow - he insists on taking the bus from Heathrow to Cambridge because he is a stubborn mule and I'm sure it is partly because he wants to prove to himself and others that he can still do it!
Please don't let ageism hold you back!

I was being a bit sarcastic in the title of my post. It's not that I feel that we are old, I was just trying to speak comparatively to what I have heard about South Beach. Some of these replies have eased my mind a bit about my decision to go there for my birthday. By the way, last year we took an Alaskan cruise on HAL. There we got to be the youngsters.

Actually Don, you will find that most of the attention is focused on the younger crowd, but you will certainly not be out of place. Untuck your shirt, don't wear socks, put on some sun glasses and you will fit in well into your 80's.
