7 hour layover in Newark

We've got a 7 hour layover in Newark, from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am. Is there anything to do? This will be on a Sunday night Monday morning. We were thinking about renting a car, and seeing some of the sites around New York. But I don't know how safe that would be, and is there really much to see at that time of the night. Or should we just get a taxi and maybe find a restaurant etc. I will have two teen agers with us, so night clubs etc. won't work. Any sugestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Renting a car and driving around NYC sounds like your best bet if you really can't bear to stay in the airport. Be sure to check out the NY by night skyline from Hoboken or Weehawken. In the city, it may surprise you how many people are up and about in certain neighborhoods, especially downtown. And then grab a bite to eat at 24 hour spot.

There is plenty to do in NY at night. That is
when the city is most alive. It is safe enough
to rent a car, and drive to New York. It isn't far
from Newark airport. I would take the Lincoln
Tunnel. Just get good directions before you go.
The Empire State building is opened until 11 pm.
Carolina's Comedy Club, near Times Square, has
a restaurant. It is a lot of fun. The waiters,
and everyone that works there are Comedians.
Walking around the city is fun at night, in the
busier areas.

This is one of the more interesting questions/challenges I have seen on this site. I assume you are not concerned about falling asleep while driving around or walking the streets.

Renting a car at Newark is easy, as is driving into the city on a Sunday night. Be advised that even the city that doesn't sleep does get quiet on Sunday nights. But never dead.

There are several options. I would consider exploring a neighborhood in the city on foot for a while. The upper west side/Lincoln Center area is always hopping with people, restaurants, shops, etc. and is fun and safe. The Saloon across from the Metropolitan Opera House is a good bet for food. Soho will have people out and about, but it is much more chi-chi and the kids may not be into it as much. South Street Seaport will also be open, although getting quiet at that hour. There are wonderful views of Manhattan and its bridges from the end Piers at South Street Seaport. Its open-air waterfront restaurants, which are good, should be pleasant on a quiet summer night. So for eating and looking, these are your best bets on Sunday night.

If you are comfortable driving around New York, Fifth Avenue should be blissfully empty, and you will be able to stop, look etc. at the shops, churches, Rockefellar Center with little problem. Then, continue driving over to the U.N. for another great view. Actually, if you drive east on 41st street to the end and make a left, you are in the Tudor City neighborhood (lovely in itself) which has drop-dead views of both the U.N. and the Chrysler Building. After that, zoom down the FDR and consider taking the Staten Island Ferry for a round-trip. Leave the car parked (legally) on a street or in a lot and go on foot. I think it operates all night long and costs like 50 cents or something. You will have wonderful views of the Statue of Liberty, the skyline, the bridges, etc. This really should be on all tourist itineraries.

That's about all I can think of on a summer Sunday night with layover time at Newark. Just make sure before you take the plunge that you are up to this exciting but potentially exhausting effort.

Well thanks for the advice. We will be coming back from 2 weeks in Europe, so I don't know what shape we'll be in to do anything. But we live on the West coast and would sure like to see New York. Thanks again.

You might also considering renting a limo to take you from Newark to New York and show you the sights. It will be more expensive, but you won't risk getting lost and missing your plane, getting lost, etc. You can get out and look at things, and the limo will be waiting for you. New Jersey people do this occasionally if they want to party in NYC and not worry about parking, drinking, etc. Have fun!
