Ann Taylor Loft, usually has a good selection of petites. For more casual clothes, check Lands End on line.

Try Coldwater Creek, which has petites up to extra large.

If you do try Coldwater Creek. Be aware that they often do a $25 off of $100, or $5 -15 off of $50-$72. Check the internet to see if you can locate a coupon or some magazines have them.

Oh yeah, and they have a really good Fall sale going on - on the internet too, like 75% off.

There is a Chico's at 75th St and 3rd Ave. Not exactly near your hotel, but you'll be going uptown, won't you?

Chicos is always good for me. I am 5'2 and... well, what's the word? Chubby! Roundish! And certainly of a certain age.

My slogan for Chico's is "Clothes for women who used to be hip" but my cousin has a better one: "Chico's: clothes for women who used to wear zippers."

I think you'll like Chico's. Here a link:

Ya know, tuscan, I love Chico's...but they really don't cut for petites. I can buy tops there , but forget the pants. Everything is a 1,2,3...etc.
As far as Ann Taylor....well fine if you don't have breasts. Their cuts are way too small in the top. Liz is much better. I have narrow hips but ...ahem...full breasts and some lines are not quite in tune with that. And to make matters worse, clothes are shorter and tighter in the last years as women age and spread. It's not a happy time to buy clothes....

I`m 5 feet tall and petites are generally too long for me. So it doesn`t matter if I get petite, regular or tall--I have to hem them anyway.

A big thank you to everyone who responded. Your replies have been extremely useful and I have made copious notes and looked at the recommended websites. I now know what to look for.

Well then Sandiemac, just be sure to have a wonderful trip and let us know how it goes. A shopping and trip report would be great upon your return home.

I did like the comments about Chicos ("those...who used to wear zippers"). Why is the industry ignoring the gazzillions of women who (finally) can afford to buy what they want, but can't find anything that fits them?

I scanned the above, did anyone mention J. Jill? They have a large petite section.

I'm with you Linda regarding Chico's - I was always under the impression that those were clothes for tall women. Everything just seemed out of proportion for me. And I had never heard of the Nygard label so thanks for that recommendation.

My favorites are Ann Taylor petites (not being particularly well endowed up top), and Lord & Taylor.

Go Chico's! Changed my life --- some of the other lines mentioned are good style and value (Liz, Jones, etc.) but Chico's is definitely the most fun. I don't think you'll find anything like them in England --- so do check them out.
P.S. Now some Chico's pants come in regular and short lengths, so petites can save sometimes on some alterations, I know I can.

If you do decide to go to Chicos (love the outlets), join their club online for discounts, coupons, and a teeny percentage off when you shop.
