Dick's understanding is true for all the islands and all the rental companies. If you know that you will be doing a hiking trail that needs four wheel drive than I would take this option. Alakai Swamp on Kauai has 3 miles of unpaved road that shave off significant time of a wonderful hike. You should read Big Island revealed they will let you know when a four wheel is necessary.

My husband and I didn't feel that we saw much less or saved more money than if we'd rented a 4x4. We went on a tour up Mauna Kea with Arnott's Lodge; much less stress not worrying about the difficult terrain and vapor lock, and another shorter tour by mule-wagon into beautiful Waipio Valley-great!

We rented a 4x4 on the big island while we were there. We found a local who told us about a beach only 4x4's could get to. It was the most wonderful experience ever and only one other couple was there. The sand was like flour and the water was the bluest ever. One drawback: Our jeep did not have a top and it did rain once and we got soaked. But, that also was remembered as one of the more fun times we had on the island. At minimum, rent a convertible to get the true feel of the island.
Have fun.
Have fun.
