Meant to add -- I know you are trying to avoid long drive days -- but there honestly is no reason to prolong the trip across that part of the State. It is dry, and not very scenic/interesting. So sacrifice one day to major driving . . . and have more time to stay in places you'd actually want to be.
One long-ish day in the car vs two only as little shorter drives (Lake Isabella to LV is nearly 5 hours by itself). Drive through and get it over with.

just to update you, we've added another night at Pismo Beach and cancelled Lake Isabella, so we'll do the drive from Pismo to LV in one long day. Thanks again for your help and advice.

For your stay at Pismo Beach, try to get a room at the Sea Crest if its in your budget. usually around $173 ti $200 for a full ocean view room with balcony. You can walk right down to the beach and be in the water in a few minutes!

On the drive to Vegas, once you get past Barstow, the mountains in the distance are really beautiful. The whole landscape is totally barren, but it definitely has its own beauty.
About five miles before Stateline, which is right on the Nevada side of the State line, on your left (north) you'll see the Ivanpah Solar Farm.
