My son just got a college internship in Baltimore and will need a temporary place to live. Anyone have any suggestions about short term rental beginning in mid-September? The bonus is we'll be able to visit DC at least twice and have a free place to stay! Any suggestions appreciated.

Is he interning at a college or at a business? If he will be at Johns Hopkins or any of the other colleges in the North Charles Street corridor, I would say near campus. If downtown, I would say the Mount Vernon Square area near downtown, where many great old mansions have been converted to apartments. Lots of interesting shops, restaurants and clubs in this area. Mount Washington, further from downtown, is also a delightful area with many amenities.

back in the late 1980s I lived at 1010 St. Paul Street. It was a security apartment building with 10 floors of apartments. I know they have studios and 1 BD, maybe even 2 BD. It is about 10 blocks from Inner Harbor and it was a nice place to live for 2 yrs. They may give you temporary housing, don't know number just call directory assistance and ask.

You may want to try looking in the Baltimore Sun, sublet.com, oakwood.com. Perhaps he can check with his school or the employer hes doing his intership with so they can place him somewhere either on another school campus or with other interns that may be in the city. Just some suggestions

The apartment buildings on this page are mostly in the Mount Vernon area, which I mentioned (as is the 1010 St.Paul building mentioned by another poster.) If he will be working at the "pier" (probably what Baltimore calls the Inner Harbor) these will all be reasonably nearby. Note that there are also tabs to go to other neighborhoods. One is for places in Mount Washington, which I mentioned and recommend. It and the other areas with tabs on this site--Charles Village, Roland Park, Hampden--are all interesting, relatively safe, but further from the Inner Harbor, although easily accessible by public transportation.

As you can see from the web sites listed, a number of the apartment communities which offer short term leases are run by Southern Management. This is a large and reputable management company in the Baltimore -Washington area--probably the largest. They have many, many buildings, mostly affordably priced. I lived in one of their complexes in the past, and found them decent landlords.

The Baltimore City Paper is a weekly widely read by younger people in particular. Your son will want to become aquainted with the site and the paper, which is widely available for free. This is a link to their share rentals classified section. A number of the places listed are in Federal Hill, which would also be a convenient and interesting location for some one working at the Inner Harbor. The newspaper and the web site also carry regular apartment ads.

I hope your son enjoys his time in Baltimore. I don't live there, although I live not far away, and have come to realize it's a much underrated city rich with attractions.

I can't help you with the housing question, but... By any chance is the firm your son will be with Design Collective? If so, it is a great firm with super people. I've know the owner for over 12 years. He is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.

I can't thank all of you enough for all the information. You have really helped us. I'm not sure of the name of the firm but will find out. I am much more concerned about where he will live than he is. To him it's just a great adventure. "Don't worry Mom!" Guess I'll learn to let go some time.
