3 Days in DC - Hotel Topaz or Monaco?

I am tagging along on a business trip with husband to DC in May. Want to see Quilts of Gees Bend at the Corcoran and have tickets for Arena Stage. Currently have a reservation at Hotel Monaco, but am now concerned about posts regarding dodgy area at night. Should I switch to Hotel Topaz (also Kimpton hotel)? I've been to DC before and seen the typical tourist spots, but still love The Mall and museums. We do love to walk around, take in the local atmosopher and dine at little local places with good food rather than the big glitz.

Help from locals will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I've worked in DC and lived in the area for quite awhile and I'd prefer the Dupont Circle area and the Topaz over the 7th and F Sts area. The Monaco does sound lovely but I'm not in love with the area at night. It's still a little on the fringe from the MCI Center.

I work a block away from the Monaco, and thus am not bothered by the area. head south from the hotel, and you're in the heart of the trendy Penn Quarter, with plenty of good restaurants and clubs. It's also near some of the Smithsonian museums and on the same block as the popular Spy Museum. But for a neighborhood with general bustle and activity everywhere, I'd agree that the Topaz is a better choice. There's something for everyone in DuPont Circle, and it's closer to Adama-Morgan and other interesting area.
