1st Maine Coast trip (help)

My wife and I would like to plan a 5 to 7 day trip to the east coast of Maine. It will be our 1st trip without kids. Our "baby" is now 18yrs old and the other 2 have been out of the house for a while. Our 30th wedding anniversary is Late Sept. and would like to plan the trip for that time. We are still very much in love and looking for a romantic vacation, however I would like some help from people who have been there. We love sea food, various types of entertainment, scenic drives, Bed & Breakfasts. Thanks for your help

Hello! Norris, my husband and I have made this trip for the past four years. It's absolutely gorgeous and a perfect getaway for a couple. I would suggest the following:

Kennebunkport-Maine Stay Inn or White Barn Inn (White Barn is more expensive but gorgeous, however the innkeepers at the Maine Stay are delightful and the inn is beautiful too!) You could always have dinner at the White Barn if you choose to stay somewhere else. It's magnificent!

Freeport-drive through and enjoy the outlets if that's of interest. It's nothing like any other outlet center in the country. Heck, the buildings are so charming you really don't realize you are in an outlet area!

Monhegan Island-If you are adventurous I would HIGHLY recommend a day or so on the island. It's ten miles out to sea and you can catch the mail ferry from Port Clyde. We overnight in Port Clyde usually. The island is remote, tranquil and a natural beauty. We stayed at the Trailing Yew which is an inn on the island that does not have electricity. The meals are included and AWESOME. Our light was by kerosene. The stay will amaze you and it's a sharp contrast to the luxury inns we stay at on the mainland.

Bar Harbor-perfect! Acadia National Park is picture perfect. You could easily spend several days in that area. We recommend Able's Lobster Pound for a nice traditional lobster dinner and Rosalie's Pizza in town is great! We usually stay at the Bar Harbor Inn which is nice and everything in town is within walking distance.

If you would like more details let me know! Have a great time!

I agree with everything posted above. I would definitely stay at the White Barn. Do be sure to eat there--it's an experience you won't forget. The only thing I would add is a drive down the coast just south of Kennebunkport, through Ogunquit and York. Both are charming oceanside communities. The beach houses along the coast in that area are right out of the movies. Along the drive there are little pull-outs with benches where you can sit, stretch your legs and take in the beautiful scenery. I believe it is the York area that has a beautiful lighthouse on an island about 100 yards off-shore--great photo spot. By the way, the coast near the Bush compound in Kennebunkport is among the most scenic in Maine. Keep in mind that it's a long drive from the southern coast to Bar Harbor. I would plan on staying 7 days so that you can see what you want at your leisure. Have a wonderful trip.

Norris,
a preety area just north of Kenneybunkport, and south of Biddeford ia Goose Rocks Beach.
It is very isolated in the fact there are no through roads there to anywhere, and it is off RT.9 which goes along the coast.
The is an inn, on the road that goes along the beach, but we have always rented a house on the beach there, so I can not tell you how it is.
This is the place to be if you want an empty beach to walk on, otherwise staying closer into town (kenneybunkpost) would be better.

Norris,
If the Maine coast books up as fast as Vermont does in "foliage" season, I would make reservations really soon!
