The best museums on pure quality would be the ones Easytraveler already gave you....Exploratoreum, and California Academy of Sciences. If you have a membership to your home city's science museum they may have a reciprocal membership where you get one free entrance for your family to one of these.

Agree whole-heartedly with the recommendations for the Exploratorium. It will have something appealing for all ages, including the adults.
Aslo agree with skipping Redding. Yawn. I'd much rather stay in Ashland!
