12/12/08 - big ice storm in northeast

There were several posters here planning trips in New England this weekend. Currently there is a dangerous ice storm going on in north-central MA and most of NH. Many areas are without power. Should get better later today, but it is going to take a while for power to get back on since much of it is local outages from trees and branches. Plan accordingly.

The governor of MA has declared a state of emergency, and the TV news says that half of NH is without power. Here in Boston, between 8:00 and 8:30 AM the temperature rose from 36 degrees to 61. Bring layers!

I live on the MA/NH border. We have no power or phone and spent last night listening to tree branches crash on our roof. But as I type this at work, the sun is coming out.

I live in Mass just outside the 495 and the power came back on at 1pm.
it cooled down to 56F inside so we went to Starbucks in a neighboring town for a couple of hours and returned just in time to see the lights come back on.

Yes sf I do have power and phone at work - one town over. Left the 2 teenage boys at home because they had no school.

"What can we do? How can I charge my cell phone? Waaaah! Waaah!" Says I, "Read a book. Clean something. I'm leaving for work. Don't open the fridge."

The horror!

I live just south of Route 495, my mother just north - about 3 miles apart. I have power, no ice on trees - it rained last night. Just 3 miles away there is ice everywhere, trees down, and no power. I just rescued my 80 year old mother who had been without power for 12 hours with no estimate of reconnection. Happy to do it, but I took today off from work to get a lot of things done around the house - and am hoping she does not want me to entertain her.

gail, you must live pretty close to me. We had no ice on trees, and power. When I left to go to work, drove maybe 1/2 mile and started seeing ice, and downed branches

I live in northern VT and we got all snow. In fact, drove home from Montreal today with no problems. About 6". Hope you folks down south are doing OK!
