107 state-to-state surface crossings. How many have you done?

Of the many "how many have you done" lists, I read about this one two days ago on another discussion board. I think it's pretty amazing. How many have you done? This includes all kinds of surface crossings - bridge, tunnel, swim, walk - immediately between two states. A few notes:

- Alaska has none, as ferries between WA and AK cross international/Canadian waters. No HI, for same reason. But MI-WI and MN-MI ferries (or if you swim/sail) do.

- AR-CO and NM-UT don't count, as they only touch at a point, not a real border.

- DC isn't a state, so isn't counted

Here's the list. I've done 84 of them:

1. AL FL

Here are the 23 that I've not crossed:

AR-MS, CA-OR, CO-NM, CO-OK, CO-WY, DE-PA, ID-NV, ID-OR, ID-VT, ID-WY, IL-MI, IA-SD, IA-WI, KY-VA, MI-MN, MN-ND, MO-NE, MT-ND, MT-SD, NE-SD, NV-OR, NM-OK & ND-SD

I think one of the most remote land border is between MT and SD. No "through" roads between the two states, but one can enter MT from the SD side.

I can just imagine the fate of this on that "other' travel board you seem rather reluctant to tell us about.

IMO, this is about as interesting as counting the number of rugae you've come in contact with.

I can see counting up the number of states you've been to, but this? Are we having a realllllllllly slow night, rkkwan?

When I was six I loved counting the number of cracks in the side walk I stepped across. Is this the same sort of thing?

One thing I do know and that is that I would have a VERY hard time estimating how many times I have done this:
IL to IN to MI and MI to IN to IL

That one hundreds and hundreds of time in my life.

Because we go on drive trips many of those listed I have done at least once, except no far NW or far NE state accesses.

Call me stupid but I don't get this.

What do you mean by state to state surface crossings?

How could you possibly count them all? I drove across country for the first time at 10 years old?

Someone explain this please?

This might be interesting if people rarely left their states, but I agree with GoT...I started car travel as an infant..just living in NYC alone, we drove to Connecticut, NJ, Mass,Pa, etc...sometimes 5 times a week....sorry.

Hm... Let me explain this again.

There are 107 immediate borders between two states (not all land, like MI-MN). Doesn't mean the number of actual road crossing. For example, between California and Nevada, there may be 50 roads to cross, and you can also hike; but CA-NV is counted as one.

Well, there are people who "collect" airlines, airports, highest this, longest that; so why not count the borders? And if you actually look at the map and check the possible crossings, it's actually pretty fun and educational if one's interested in US geography. One can appreciate how varied and interesting the US landscape is.

As an example, one of the crossings I've not done is MI-MN. How do one do it with public transport? Well, the Isle Royale National Park is on an island in Lake Superior, and belongs to Michigan. But it's closer to Ontario or Minnesota than Michigan. In fact, one gets there by taking a ferry from MN.

Or like the land crossings I've mentioned between Montana and South Dakota. I wonder how many people do cross that 70-mile stretch of border with no major roads.

Or think about how many bordering states a state may have. MO and TN each has eight, which I think are the highest. While Maine only has one neighbor. [AK and HI has none.]

I think at least a few people will be interested...

And the way to do it is like KE1TH has. Look at a US map, and then check off each one on the list in the first post. You may be surprised how few most people have done, even if one's travelled extensively by car for years.

Even some of the ones on the E. Coast aren't done regularly by visitors, when there's no major interstates that cross that border.

Anyways, I first read this on the "Travel" forum on flyertalk.com. One person claimed he's done 106 of them. Maybe, maybe not. I reorganized the list so that they're in alphabetical order.

Some people just like to list things. I love it when I get to add a new state to the list of states I've been to. So I understand the game rrkwan. But I just never traveled much by car - I think my father's head would have exploded if we took a family road trip so mine is a short list. But since no one else is playing...

AL - FL
PA - NJ
NY - NJ
TX - AR
TX - NM
TX - LA
VA - MD
VT - NH

Wow - I learned a couple of things. I've done more than I would have thought ... and I don't know my state abbreviations very well!

Ok - here are mine:

1. CA-NV
2. NV-UT
3. UT-CO
4. CO-WY
5. WY-UT
6. GA-AL
7. CT-NY
8. NY-NJ
9. NJ-PA
10. TN-AK
11. TN-MS
12. AZ-NV

Ok - so not too many. I am not big on long road trips though, and living my entire life in CA, I have to drive 4 hours just to get to NV - LOL. People on the east coast have an advantage

One error in your list. NC and WV do not border (VA is in the way). Maybe you meant NC - Georgia?

I'll have a few, but will have to spend some time with the map before I can have a complete list.

rkkwan, not saying I'm not interested, I'm just not getting this.

Is this just about going from state line to state line?

If you've gone from NC to GA by boat and by car does that count as two or as one?

I've done the Intracoastal Waterway from Boston to the Keys and through the Gulf to Texas. Do I count that as one trip or as multiples?

I've driven across country twice. Do both times count?

Do you see where my confusion is coming from?

You only count a state to state crossing once. That's why there's only 107 state to state crossing possible total.

Please scratch #97 NC-WV. That's wrong.

Please add #41.5 IL-MI. Not sure if there's a ferry between these two states, but they do share a ~40mi border in Lake Michigan.
