For me it is time and money, in that order, although money isn't such a big factor since I can always travel cheaper. If I could get away for longer, I would travel as cheaply as possible to stretch it out

We don't save for specific trips, just have on-going travel savings as part of our monthly budget. Then the money is there when we need it.

Part of the fun of travel is preparing for it, dreaming about it. It's not a chore. By the time we travel, we're well versed in the history and background, we have multiple ideas about what to do each day and how to do them.

Your problem is that many apps out there already help with organizing and planning and research. There's a law of diminishing return for more apps, and I am an old fogey, I refuse to commit to the time to keep learning more and more apps. I'd rather use my brain at least some of the time, it comes free and frankly, it could use the exercise....

Getting there!

We really love being "there" (wherever "there" is)) but in the last few years we hate getting "there."

Flying used to be somewhat comfortable and somewhat fun. in the last few years flying is a challenge.
Coach flying that is---we can't afford business or first class. Uncomfortable seats that keep getting closer together, horrible lines in the airports. But obviously some thrive on that as every plane we are on is full.

Although I must add that our last flight to London on British Air was better than most.

So true, TPAYT. That's why I take long trips - I amortize the pain of flying over more days. And I still collect FF miles on my credit card so I can use the wonderful One World RTW award in biz class - it's only 50% more expensive than the economy version.

Hello donotmisslist! Well, my "saving money" period depends on the destinations (considering distance & duration) I'd like to go and my capability of earning enough fund on my travels. If I plan to travel on "pricey" destinations in Europe (Paris, Milan, etc) or even in US (New York, California, etc), I usually spend 6 months up to a year saving. But I never forget to do some local trips which are less expensive while saving money for a big trip.

Hi,

I biggest issue is time, time, time! I used to backpack for months on end and can't get out of that mentality of thinking that to properly see a country you need a month or more - which is obviously not possible these days.

Good luck!

Normally I will have big trip which takes up to 1 month and vacations at weekends once in two months. So my drive of working is normally to the next trip. Or else, everything would be very hard.

For me #1 is time, but that's only until I retire. In the meantime - I can't believe no one said "elderly parents." That has become an increasing hurdle for us.

Hello! My first time here on the forum.

For me, it's mainly the insufficient number of vacation days and money, of course. I travel usually around Europe, but it would be good to travel overseas more often!

For us as our son is on his own and we have no pets the issues are getting time off from work, especially for my wife and of course money. However most people have a budget so I think that's a given. We like cruising but can't do the so called luxury lines like Silversea, Regent, etc. as it's too expensive but we have been very happy with the rest like Princess, X, Royal, etc.

Other limits are world situations. For example no cruises that are in pirate infested waters.

We consider the weather. We would like to go to Australia but that has to be during their winter as their summers are too hot for us.

We also like to see places we haven't been to before so in a sense we are limited by all of the above as we want to go when it's pleasant weather and then if we get the time off from work and of course the cost. If it's a trans Pac flight for example I just can't go in coach to say Asia (we are in Chicago) as it's too much for me so therefore finding decent biz airfare factors in.

Finally as we are nearing retirement age and I am semi-retired already and have travelled quite a bit in our lives and are grateful for this its narrowing down a destination that excites us. In earlier yrs. it was easy. Let's go to A, B or C as we have never been there. Now you could say we are more selective about what we want to do and spend our money on.
