What would make you participate in Fodor's forums more fully?

Fodor's is, IMO, a stronger and more valuable place in part because we are all free to provide the advice or comments that we think best.
If only that were true. I have quit posting on certain forums because of the bullying from certain regulars. So I guess back to the original question I might participate more fully if I didn't have to put up with that.

Avoiding failed posting of long and/or thoughtful posts including trip reports: I write mine in a word processor then cupy/paste int Fodors.
As to avoiding bullying or other offensive posts: One thread I was following started to be polluted by an aggressively negative individual. When he turned antisemitic, I triangled . The offensive posts were removed from the thread. If you feel bullied, triangle the offending post. Better to lose the offender than the victim.

Maybe we could, but the chances it would get used are very slim. So probably not. BUT you can save such a Google search as a bookmark in your browser!

For your #2, go to My Settings, Edit Options, Messaging & Notification, Default Thread Subscription Mode. If you make a change, be sure to SAVE your choice at the bottom of the page."
I do see that now but only in "full site" mode.
I don't see those options in the mobile version. Which is what I pretty much always use. Maybe I'm missing something.

kja~ There are many ways to put someone down that are not actually triangle worthy. Constant belittling, questioning, and making fun of what a person posts can be hurtful and discourage participation, but is not technically against the rules.

True enough. When I see comments like that, I think they speak about the character of the person who posted them. JMO.
