Really? Is this new? I started out British, but now have US citizenship as well, and have never encountered this.

It must be. I've never encountered it before either. If you are overseas, you can send in a colour photocopy of every page of your non British passport, but if you live & apply from within the UK, you must send the passports themselves. And that is risky. The online form asks if you have a passport from another country and you can select the country from a dropdown list. I know that it is a UK requirement that names must be aligned on all passports and if necessary, the non British passport(s) must be changed, they won't change the British one but that can be quite hard for some nationalities, as I am discovering. Even a character out is an issue.

Every page?!?! I have an awful lot of blank pages in my current US passport. Given that the UK is no longer in the EU, maybe I'll just stick with the US one.

I can't read all the instructions online without submitting a photo, but it looks like I need a resident of the UK, who is not related to me, to confirm my identity. I haven't lived there for nearly 50 years and cannot think of anyone who meets that requirement, so it looks like I can't renew it anyway. Is it possible to renew in person in the UK?

Ah, further research turned up this:

Online Premium service

You’ll apply, pay and book an appointment online. The earliest you can get an appointment is 2 days from when you apply.

You’ll get your new passport at your appointment. Appointments can last up to 30 minutes.

It costs £193.50 (or £204.50 for a 50 page frequent traveller passport).

You can only use Online Premium to renew an adult passport that was issued after 31 December 2001.

I think I will wait until my next visit, although I will have to enter on my US passport.

Apparently so, according to some Brits I know overseas. They had reams of paper to send in. Better that then sending the original passport, passport office has been known to lose documents.

Not sure how not having a British passport would work to enter the UK when someone is a British citizen & has the right of abode, esp when the time comes that the UK needs visitors to have ETIAS. Will the UK one day be like the US, where it is mandated to enter the US on a US passport if you have one? I also "heard" that trying to renew British passports that have lapsed for several years might be more difficult. Whether that is true or not, I do not know.

Well, if my UK passport has expired, I don't technically have one.... i don't know how to get around the problem with confirming my identity, unless someone I know only online would do it.
