JJ5: all through my thirties, forties and early fifties, people always thought I was younger than I am. But just as you said: 55 hit and that party was OVER! Face fell, neck sags a bit. And then I went gray and ditched the contact lenses. I look exactly 56, which is what I am.

My mother told me not to go gray, because people would think I was DH's mother! Mom is so rude. DH is 5 years younger than I, but fortunately, we look the same age. His family ages badly, and mine does very well in that department.

Glamour mom and dad finally look somewhat close to their ages (86 and 83), but for all of their 70s they looked about 65. So at least I've got the decent aging genes. But GM and GD cared a LOT more about looking young and good than I do. And did and do a lot more about it. Mom still dyes her hair at 83.

Clinique Anti Gravity cream is helping with my saggy neck.

It doesn't take long to apply, Suki. I cut total prep from about 10 minutes to 5 or 6, I believe.

tuscanlifeedit, my ex-husband was 5 years younger than I was too (we were married over 20 years). And I still look better than he does. LOL!

I just went to hair frosting as I do not have grey at all- but it was getting flatter, duller in color and I needed a lift. I have been red, blonde and whatever several different times in my life. Hair changes can pick you up and my hair was a middle chestnut/auburn when very young and just got duller as I aged.

Yes, I look my age too now. The area under the outer corners of my eyes fell. My chin and neck are very good- but my eyes are big and now they "fold". LOL!

Spending on your skin is never a mistake. The French say,"You either keep your face or your figure." And in my mother's case that was truly correct. She got huge, but had great facial skin. At 83 when she passed this July, one of my biggest and hardest desicions was to have her hair dyed as she liked it. (Her last months were so bad that they wouldn't allow it.)

It was a bit of a fight with one sibling, but I won. She would have wanted it that way. And it looked great.

I have one very thin (and terribly proud of it too) girlfriend who has creases you could put your finger into. I would rather have some flesh and still have a decent face.

Suki, I'll ditto JJ5. It takes me much less time than liquid foundation does. I knew I had finally gotten it right when a friend said "Your skin looks so clear!." I don't think anybody had ever told me that.

Never heard the French line about face or figure but it surely is true.

I have to add that I hear the same thing about my skin when I wear the mineral makeup. Thye all have natural SPF too. I think the skin is able to breathe better and you won't get clogged pores, something that can happen with liquid foundation. Mineral makeup gives skin that soft, smooth look. I am sure you will love it! Make sure you get a good brush to apply it with.

I saw that there is an Ulta store 10 minutes from my home so tomorrow, I will go over and buy the Bare Minerals starter kit. I'm excited!

Reviving this thread because I need help!

I have never used a foundation before - just a bit of concealer where needed but I recenlty bought Bare Minerals foundation from ULTA - the kind you apply with a brush. I LOVED it for a week or so - nice evening out of skin tone and I looked dewy not powdery, which I feared BUT then I started breaking out! I haven't broken out in a long time so I stopped using it until I can get over the break out - do you think I have to stop using it altogether or do you think my skin is just adjusting to the new product?

Thanks!

I think your skin is just adjusting.

My breakouts have almost completely gone away since I started using Bare Minerals or Escentuals or whatever it is.

This is right up my alley, since I was in the first Bare Escentuals infomercial. I have been using it since 1987 (20 years!), and would honestly never use anything else. It looks great, feels great, and is so good for your skin (I get compliments on my skin all the time).

If you have any questions regarding application, I would be happy to answer them. It is absolutely true that less is more with this product, and the biggest mistake people make with it is using too much.

i have really oily skin, and mineral makeup just seems to clog up my skin, and make it oilier.

I use Jane Iredale because it has a wider range of colors. (You have to have a wide range to find my color of pale.) I also use Physician's Formula minerals. Look for a type with titanium dioxide. That gives you the coverage and sunscreen. Mica looks cheap and is in most of the drugstore brands.

Mineral makeup is easy to apply and it looks like you are wearing nothing.

frankie is right, I don't think it is good in oily spots or for oily skin. My sister has more oily skin and she did not like it.

I too found Physician's Form. minerals had even better color match for me.

kireland--I think it may indeed be that your skin is just in a transitional phase, and may need a little more time to adjust.
But one other thing I learned with using mineral makeup---the applicator brushes needed to be washed much more often than I had expected. I had never used a brush to apply foundation until I tried the minerals, and I did notice a little flare-up after a few days. I really loved the look of the minerals, so I stuck with them a bit longer, making sure to wash the brush every few days. (washing them is a cinch, getting them to dry can be a lot harder ) I guess buying multiple brushes would be an obvious remedy, so that you always have a clean one available, but boy are they expensive !

I've had good results with both the Youngblood and Physician's Formula brands, but even so, I learned a lot from reading all the comments on this thread. So, thanks, kireland, for reviving it !

Ahh, got me again! I should have checked first. So sorry so sorry so sorry. I will now go pour another vodka, eat my frozen pizza, and remember all of my lessons while sitting in the corner.

Bringing an old topic to the top of the list.
When I first tried Bare Escentuals Bare Minerals, I thought it made my 'lines' look more pronounced. But I kept using it, and learned to use LESS AND LESS, and voila! no more problems with the lines.
I also found that the two related shades that come in the starter kit work best for ME when I mix the two together. Perfect match, even when I get a little color in the summer.
After using this product for over a year, I recently realized that I just have NO breakouts again.
Also it has SPF protection.
Tried the Revlon and found it too heavy, went back to Bare Minerals.
Who else uses this product?
What have your experiences been?

I know this is several years later, but have you thought that you may have Rosacea? I have only a little redness, but the issue is those rotten bumps which eventually cause your nose to look like WC Fields.

Also redheads (or redhead skin) there is a wonderful line of products called... Just for Redheads. They also carry a mineral makeup.

AND beware the cheap makeups often contain talc this can irritate sensitive skin. (I THINK L'oreal does. I'd have to read the ingredients.)

I have Lupus and honestly can not wear most makeups due to the fact it causes my face to crack and bleed quite bad...kind of like a really really really bad allergic reaction.

A friend of mine suggested Bare Minerals severals times to me so i coughed up the money and purchased it...Boy am I happy i did that! it's around 60.00 for the start up kit (2 foundations, one all over face bronzer, and three brushes along with a face lotion that is out of this world!)

I purchased mine in November of last year. I wear it every single day and the container still is almost full so it will last you a LONG time.

The one thing I do want to warn you about is if you are traveling with it...The container has tiny holes to sift the make up when you are ready to use it...even though it has a lid, if your luggage is tossed around which it will be..the make up will come up out of those holes and I have tried since December of last year to get it to go back down and it just wont.

Here's an interesting bit that was on TV. Paula Begoun writes the books that compare and rate beauty products.

Chladyg,

I was reading labels at the drug store the other day. The older version of l'Oreal Bare Natural Foundation contained talc while their new improved one does not. The store had some of each, all mixed on the same shelf, and the packaging looked the same, so you really have to read the fine print.
