We're heading to Nicaragua in a few weeks. Guess I can't really recommend it yet since we haven't been, but have been encouraged by the stats showing the 2nd lowest crime rate in Latin America. Lower than Costa Rica, which does get a lot of tourism.
Lots of volcano treks have come up in our research. We're going to be heading to Grenada, and old colonial city, with a couple day side trip to Ometepe Island (a pair of volcanoes forming an island sticking up from the biggest lake in C. America. Plan to zipline down Mombacho Volcano, just outside of Granada too. So, just a thought, for what it's worth. Will be trying to report when we get back, but there's a couple of pretty good reports on the Latin America forum now.

clarasong - that sounds absolutely lovely!
clifton - i was throwing the idea of seeing nicaragua around as well. specifically Big Corn/Little Corn Island, since I am absolutely in love with little-known tropical spots (So far I have only been to Roatan Honduras.. in 2004, when it was not so touristy... and I have been to Sayulita, Nayarit in Mexico.. it was nice but a tad bit too touristy.)

Hmm... gotta admit, I'm outside the loop on most places. I'd have never guessed that Honduras had a real touristy area except maybe Copan. In comparison, I'm not sure how the Corn Islands, or Nica in general would compare. I do wish we had the time to find out! I got the photog thing going too ('cept my things are mostly people/street shots and mountains)
You know... I don't know much about the place, but it was interesting in reading. Holbox island.. off the north of Yucatan. For it's nearest airport being Cancun, it sounded kind of isolated. Middle of a wildlife preserve as I recall. Just sort of popped in my head as it sounded like what you were talking about. Just in case you're still poking at travel guides and such.
