I have a Canon Digital Rebel 300D and also a Digital Rebel XT 350D and both are wonderful cameras. I have been shooting with film SLRs for over 30 years (ya, I'm older) and have 4 P&S cameras (1 kodak - 3 olympus) and they just aren't fast enough for me. I have the 'kit' lense with both the camera and must say the original 18-55 lense is much better than the Mark II with the new XT. I recently purchased the Sigma 18-200 lens and am extremely pleased with it so far. The shots I have taken are shark / colors are outstanding and the lens is light enough to carry around. I have taken some indoor shots without flash and they came out well. Both ends of the camera (for my taste) are very very very acceptable. Unless you have a lot of money to spend on better glass, I would highly recommend the Sigma 18-200.
Everyone has their personal preferences and one person's likes are anothers dislikes. My son uses the 300D and I wouldn't hesitate to purchase another for him.
I also have a Tiffen Haze-1 filter on the Sigma and Hoya UV filters on the kit lenses.
A friend has a sony and the pictures are good, but side by side the Digtal Rebel XT beats it hands down. I saw pictures from the Nikon D70 and while they are impressive, I personally find the pictures on the Digital Rebel and Rebel XT more appealing. Of course that is a subjective view and not quantitative analysis.
Hope that is helpful a bit.

Tomb,
Many thanks for your informative response! I really want the Rebel xt & the 18-200 lens. My husband is encouraging me to go ahead and get the camera. He isn't so sure about the lens. My next trip is to India in November and I suppose that I could just use the kit lens for that and get the big zoom later.
Did you get the firmware update for your Rebel xt? Hearing about that situation has kept me from ordering the camera right away.
