Macchu Picchu - Going Solo?
Hello,
Can anyone suggest any agencies or tours that you think would fit a 27 year old male wanting to visit Macchu Picchu alone?? I'm hesitant to do so, but it's something I just really really really want to do soon.
Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

I've successfully used Incaland Adventures several times, in fact I'm on my way there now, as a single traveler. Flavio, the owner, has become a good friend. You'll find they have top-notch service, and Flavio and his wife will do a great job organizing all the details of your trip. Last I checked, his website was being redone, but you can try it at www.incalandadventures.com or check out Incaland Adventures or Flavio Huamani Quejia on Facebook.

You can find lots of info on visiting MP at www.andeantravelweb.com
If you want to hike the Inca Trail you must go with an authorized agent and reserve well ahead in the busy summer months. If you just want to take the train you can easily book everything yourself with the possible exception of the entry tix to MP as the website is problematic. Be aware that private tours for solo travelers are a poor value. You may want to research group tours such as Gap that cater to your age group. IF you stay in hostels and small hostals you'll meet lots of other solo travelers. If you have more than a week you may want to add dome time for the jungle, L. Titicaca , Colca Canyon or other interesing placed Peru has to offer. There is far more than MP.

Check out www.saexplorers.org - great resources for hooking up with like minded travellers and a clubhouse in Cusco. Bound to be someone trying to do the same thing.

You don't even need to plan ahead. Machu Picchu tour companies are as common as convenience stores in Cusco. They all pretty much serve the same business, so you can shop around for good prices when you arrive. There are no less than 20 English-speaking tour offices at the airport (they're all over you before you even get your luggage!), and there are even more when you reach town center. But they will help you take care of transportation and all the tickets for a reasonable fee. I thought it was actually cheaper with them than if I had arranged everything myself (since those all tour companies probably get to buy tickets at huge discounts). In terms of number of people, it's no different from the Great Wall or Giza pyramids. Expect MASSES of crowds. In other words, it's pretty hard for you to get lost or not how to get anywhere even if you're going solo. It's not really as "adventurous" as one might want unless you opt for the Inca Trail, but even that is filled with tourists. Well, that's just how it is when the site is voted one of the 7 Wonders of the World.
