I was in N. Pantanal in Sept. '09 and heard from locals the same accusations that are outlined in the links provided by Carlos69 and noted by ClaudiaP. My advice to anyone traveling to the Pantanal is to steer clear of JRC even if it does reopen. We saw some rather disturbing behaviour by JRC boats in regards to respecting the jaguars. One has choices in travel. Those who are truly eco-travelers will do their best to choose lodges and operators who are above reproach in their methods, respect for the fauna and flora and support of responsible and sustainable eco-tourism as well as the local human population. Travelers' choices can have a profound impact long after they have moved on to other destinations. Regarding the future of JRC; it's now up to the Brazilian authorities and failing that, up to travelers.

To Carlos69 - Thanks for the links - to the English speakers (like me) reading this, check your web browser for a translate button - mine did a very acceptable job.

This is quite obviously nothing more than a standard dirty-tricks campaign by commercial competitors. I highly doubt that actual travelers looking for useful information on the Pantanal would bother to put through translation programs and then read seven-year-old testimony from the Brazilian congress about how to stop animal trafficking in the Amazon! Sounds like a great way to spend one's time if you are really planning a trip to the Pantanal.

No. As it happens I have no connection to any of your competitors, private, commercial or otherwise. My only connection to the tourism industry in any shape is that my wife used to work as a guide in Bahia.

I contribute to a number of travel forums and I had noticed a rash of postings about your particular enterprise, which seems to have garnered a certain notoriety, so I decided out of curiosity to look into the various claims. It's not pleasant reading if half the accusations are correct.

The links are posted in portuguese because, that's the language spoken in these parts. Unlike you I don't presume that nobody else reads or speaks the language. You clearly do make this presumption because one of the links, is an article from November last year. I merely put them here so those that are interested could judge for themselves on the basis of local reportage.

Your posts sounds like someone desperately trying to obfuscate and muddy the waters in an attempt to cling onto your what is left of your business, which I acknowledge is wholly understandable.

Recently another lodge, Refugio Ilha do Caracara, situated close to Porto Jofre, was closed because of a juridical fight and there are actually no prevision of re-opening. Does someone know the reason why it was closed? another victim of irritated competitors???

One thing has nothing to another.
This forum has lost its meaning. One regrets

Carlos appears more interested in repeating hearsay and dirty tricks comments by competitors than in learning details. If Carlos really wanted to learn the truth and the details, it would be easy, but he does not seem interested in the facts, but rather in attacks. It is not clear what his motivation is to participate in obvious mudslinging versus trying to learn what actually is going on in the field, on site.

We just finished a tour of Manu with Pantiacolla Tours. We had an amazing guide, Jose. We saw lots & lots of wildlife, including 100 varieties of birds, giant otters, 5 species of monkeys & a jaguar. poison dart frogs, cobra & other snakes. I will write my trip report soon but in the meantime, I highly recommend Pantiacolla.

Carlos has merely made available the reportage available in the Brazilian media concerning Mr Munn's activities. That may be unpalatable for Mr Munn but it is what it is. Honesty doesn't seem to be Mr Munn's strong suit. Possibly why he seems to have garnered such an unhealthy reputation.

Hi Charlie, long time no see, no talk. Hi everyone, I am Norby Lopez from Quito - Ecuador in South America, here is a reliable source of how Napo Wildlife Center was established, run and brought to success. I was part of the team that created it and managed every aspect of the project from its very beginning from year 2000, until we turned the entire lodge and project to the community, I still advise and work with the Anangu Community that since July 2007 own it 100% and it is run by a multidisciplinary team. Charlie you are not a bad person, yes outrageously egomaniac, a millonaire that inherited everything without knowing how to run an enterprise, earn your own place and walk straight with your head up, and that simply puts in jeopardy anything and everything you try to be part of. Clearly you are not a good manager or leader of anything, non of the projects you have start work correctly, if any does, they do because hard working brilliant people are doing so. While the media has been lured by your great ability of talking well about conservation, yes you have contributed to it, however your tactics are not legal and would be part of a trial for all the unethical acts and behavior you have staged in many latin american countries like Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Bolivia to mention a few good examples. All the good people that believed in you at some point, many great professionals in their field, are now gone somewhere else stronger than ever and successful, you insulted them, used the worst ways of treating people, used other individuals to harass them and never showed your face to confront the coward accusations you made, used your inherited money as to create a scenario for your own dark comfort. Or even twisted the views, created terrible atmosphere and wrong decisions of several public institutions in those countries as to bring things to your own benefit. All of these is public knowledge ladies and gentleman, and any person in Ecuador for instance can legally prove any aspect of the summarized comment. But of course people can change, people can do good and be a facilitator of the vision that we all share, conservation of key environments in our globe, like the Amazon. Dear Charlie, here there is an invitation for you to contribute correctly and be part of the solution. I am now involved in creating an ecotourism project with the Waorani, on of the most isolated cultures in the Amazon, are you willing to change and do good for people and environment?? should anyone need more details, I will be more than happy to share them, I will do my best to find time between trips and work. Actually a publication of our experience making such a great venture with the local community of Anangu in the Yasuni National Park, which ended up with what now everyone raves about: Napo Wildlife Center is on the way. Be well Charlie, here my contacts you already know: +5939 99011 505 [email protected]
