Not so much in the highlands but bring repellent, there are no window screens. Mindo had something that chewed uncovered ankle overnight! Might have been a version of sandfly judging by the reaction. I always pack antihistamine for insect bite reactions.

I think anywhere there was water there were a few, eg Baños near streams.
