Getting to So Africa from California with layover in South America
In Nov. my husband and I will travel to South Africa. We are in our 70s and flying that route in one piece requires many hours. We are thinking that we should break up the trip by spending 3 days or so in one of the South America cities e.g. Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo, etc. (We have visited Buenos Aires so we would like to go somewhere different.) We would welcome recommendations.

I did that once, stopped in Sao Paulo, then went on to Joburg via South African Airways. I enjoyed it but found it to be just as tiring as the usual route via Europe.
If you do decide to stop in SA, I vote for Rio. One of my favorite South American cities.
