RAINBOW MOUNTAIN PERU
RAINBOW MOUNTAIN or MONTAÑA ARCOIRIS - PERU
The Rainbow Mountain or Montaña Arcoiris in Cusco Peru has become one of the top attractions and hikes in the world. This is because there are only 2 places on earth where you can see this natural geological wonder: China’s Danxia Mountains and Peru’s Rainbow Mountain.
Everyone who sees the photo of the colorful Rainbow Mountain wants to see it. But after doing even the slightest amount of research many travelers give up on visiting Rainbow Mountain. Why? The hike to the top is no joke. Constantly changing weather conditions, combined with high altitude, can be a challenge for experienced hikers. But if done right it’s manageable even for those who don’t hike much.
Rainbow Mountain Hiking Tips
1. Book with a reputable tour company. Visit the Rainbow Mountain Center website http://RainbowMountain.Center to talk to a rainbow mountain advisor and they will connect you with a good tour company and guide.
2. Dress in layers. The weather at Rainbow Mountain is very unpredictable. On some days, the sun could bear down on your skin to the boil or experience snowstorm, so everything is possible.
3. Bring toiletries. There are no restrooms during this hike except for some outdoor toilets, most of them void of toilet paper and hand soap.
4. Waterproof your camera and gear. A snowstorm can come out of nowhere suddenly.
5. Make sure your tour operator includes hiking poles. When you reach the summit, the trail is steep and because it snows at night, the ground is slippery. Most reputable tour operators include hiking poles but please double check this very important detail.
What if I am not an experienced Hiker?
1. Non-experienced hikers are able to rent a horse. However, make sure you bring knee, elbow and head protection as a precaution. The horse operators are people from the community who are not trained professionals and every day there is one or two people who fall off the horses. Most cases are not serious, but there have been some horrendous experiences. It’s best to be prepared. If you book a private tour, there is less chance of injury since the guide will be with you the entire way. But if you book a group tour, there are only 2 guides for a typical group of 15 to 20 people.
2. Make sure you are fully acclimated to the altitude. You will start at 14,189 ft (4,326m) and you will reach a maximum altitude of 17,060ft (5,200m).
