Thank You

"...oh, what a beautiful voyage...", as the staff on the Fram sang during the farewell reception yesterday afternoon. A beautiful voyage indeed. We set out for Antarctica hoping to see penguins and ice. What we saw - or more accurately, experienced were penguins, ice, snow, mountains, seals, whales, albatrosses, fjords, good company, challenges new and old, incredible memories, and so much more. In short, Antarctica, South Georgia, and the Falkland Islands blew our minds and gave us memories we will keep with us for a very long time.

It's now 8:45am and we've arrived back at Las Hayas, our hotel in Ushuaia for the night. The morning was bittersweet as we relished in the friendships forged over the past 19 days and the knowledge that our paths may not cross again (except for the Internet). We enjoyed an early breakfast onboard, stepped off the Fram for one last time, bid our goodbyes, and departed for our hotel. We are in Ushuaia for one final lazy day of last-minute shopping (we are staying an extra night in Ushuaia to account for any snafus getting from the ship to the airplane, even though there were none) before we fly home tomorrow.

Thank you for joining me on this spectacular expedition. I hope some of what I shared may be useful to you and that you enjoyed the ride as much as we did. This was by far our best trip yet.

Thanks again.

What a trip and trip report!

The first trip we're planning post-retirement (exactly one year from now) is to South America, including hiking in Patagonia (friends from the US will join us on that part of the trip). This TR has been an incredible find! Would you mind emailing it to me (if you kept it in a separate Word doc). If you can, please send it to sf7307 at g mail. Thanks.

Yestravel, you're welcome. As long as the cold doesn't impact my flight home tomorrow, then I'm golden. Having lived in colder climates in the past I'm sure it won't be too bad.

Xcountry, I will gladly share some photos if and when I am able to share on this site.

SF7307, thank you. Unfortunately, I don't have the report in any other form.

Useful TR and tremendously interesting from beginning to end. Thank you again, tripplanner, for taking the time and the making the effort to write about your adventure. Happy New Year and welcome back to WDC.

AVRooster, Happy New Year. While we don't have a return trip planned, we expect to come back someday. In Argentina, we've not visited the NW and we are interested in going to Iguazu again. As for Antarctica, it will require some saving up but we do hope to go back.

MarnieWDC, you're welcome and Happy New Year. It has been as enjoyable for me writing it as I hope you reading it.

What a fantastic report. That's almost exactly the itinerary I'm trying to plan and execute.

When did this all take place, in what month?

Cafe_conleche, we were in Argentina from Dec. 1 to 15 and on the Antarctic cruise from Dec. 15 to Jan. 2. I hope you will love your trip as much as we do; we're still on a high from it and expect to be for a while.

I have no idea how I missed this (or maybe you gave me the link and I figured I'd come back to it closer to our trip), but this is such an outstanding trip report, I'm saving it now because it will keep me from having to do any of my own research on Buenos Aires (just kidding). We will be in BA for about 4 days in February, the last stop on a trip that will include Santiago, Valparaiso, Mendoza, trekking in Patagonia, a cruise around Cape Horn, and a couple of days at Iguazu Falls. This is great - thanks!!

You're welcome SF7307. If useful, I also wrote about Santiago, Valparaiso, and Iguazu Falls in my other reports.
