Free airfare to Salta in May and June for foreign tourists?

Argentina to offer free flights to Salta

Lagaceta.com website reported today that the government of Argentina in an agreement with Aerolineas Argentina are going to offer free flights from any destination within Argentina to Salta. This promotion is for the months of May and June 2011, and is only for foreign tourists. The article further stated the information was announced by Federico Posadas, the Minister of Tourism and culture, on his twitter account last Friday.

I phoned Aerolineas Argentina and the agent thought I was crazy when I inquired about the article in lagaceta. Also there is no mention on either the Argentina tourism website (minister of tourism) or the official tourism site for Salta for this promotion.

If this is true it is a great idea - do any readers have any information?

I'd like to see some official confirmation to believe this, since Aerolíneas already shows a huge deficit and this certainly would not help.

Should it turn out to be true, I suggest foreign tourists grab these free tickets ASAP, as there will probably be only a limited number available.

Well, there is a catch in this: you have to fly into Argentina with Aerolíneas.

We'll see what other restrictions apply.

It seems reasonable that Aerolineas would make this offer only to its own customers.

Certainly, but I'm pretty sure only a small percentage of foreign tourists fly into our country on Aerolíneas.
