Ecuador or Costa Rica?
If you had your choice, would you travel to Ecuador or Costa Rica for a 2-3 week vacation?
My husband and I are looking for a relaxing vacation filled with hiking/beautiful scenery. We will be traveling in mid June to early July. We are not decided on a location yet, but we want to try to be as economically minded as possible (we are open to any Spanish-speaking countries). Is one less expensive than the other, and if so, does the increased cost correlate with the distinct advantages of the destination?

I would chose Ecuador without a moment's thought. I've visited Costa Rica twice, both times for a month. I spent 3 weeks in Ecuador a year ago.
It's difficult to compare costs because 6 years had passed.
I found Ecuador to be more colourful and varied - Galapagos, the Amazon and the Andres. In fact, I liked the Galapagos enough that I wouldn't have to consider the rest of the country to make my decision. Of course, it really adds to the cost but for me it was worth it. The scenery is spectular and good friend who just returned says that the hiking is fantastic.
While I enjoyed Costa Rica while I was there, I would pick Ecuador hands down.

Since Heather mentioned the Galapagos with high praise, I'll second that. I hesitated to respond since my experience in Costa Rica and Ecuador was not really hiking, just nature walks to look at wildlife. And the Galapagos is not one of the more economical options. The cost does correlate with the uniqueness of this destination, which is a distinct advantage.
But there is nothing like the Galapagos in the whole world! Anytime of year is good for the Galapagos, as it is on the equator.

Loved both countries but had some difficulties with the altitude in Ecuador. As poor as the people are outside of Quito they are so friendly and welcoming. Ecuadoe was a very interesting country and the American dollar is the currency.
Costa rica was a beautiful country also but it seemed they went after the tourist more.
