Cusco->Puno->La Paz

I need some suggestions and recommendations on travel. I want to travel to Cusco and see Machu Picchu and then travel to Puno to see Lake Titicaca. From there I would like to go to La Paz. I would like to do all this in 9 days.

I am a female and I will be traveling with another female. I am pretty fluent in Spanish as I studied abroad in Ecuador. We are NOT high maintenance and we will be staying in hostels and looking for any fun adventure!

Thank you for any tips you can provide!

With just 9 days you do need to take care of the altitude issues. If you fly straight to Cusco you will be affected. The question is how much? Probably best to move straight on on to Ollantaytambo to explore the SV and get the train (book way in advance) to MP. Olly is also a good place to arrange horseriding rafting etc.

You could then move back to Cusco (higher altitude) for a day or two where there is a huge amount to see (especially if your are into museums, architechture etc).

The Inka Express bus is a good way to get to Puno as it makes several stops along the way to visit places of interest. The scenery on teh altiplano is truly spectacular.

Probably best to book accomodation in advance via one of the hostel booking sites, at least for Cusco and Aquas Calientes. Puno and Ollantaytambo should be ok to sort something out on arrival.

There are loads of travel agents and tour operators in Puno and we just picked one at random for a trip on the lake and it turned out fine. However, as you are fluent in Spanish you could easily just turn up at the dock and arrange a ride on one of teh many boats offering trips to the islands. Many operators were offering inclusive trips onwards to La Paz accross the lake. This was our original intention but in 2008 they closed the borders just before we arrived because of the riots in La Paz so can't really comment on that experience.

Two good websites for research are: and both are non - profit and provide sound info on tours accommodation etc.

Do not fly or take the lake cats very expensive not worth it.

La Paz dodgy around cemetario area where some drop off

so check for safety advisories and

need for Visa for entry quite expensive

In the time you have to soave would stay in Peru
