Chile questions - Wearing jewelry, hot springs near Puerto Varas

Hi
We are going to Chile next week. 2 questions:
1. Should we leave my wife's engagement ring at home? It's not particularly flashy, but it's a good-sized stone. Haven't heard about any problems with crime... We are going to be in Santiago,Valparaiso, and the Lake District.
2. Are there any good hotsprings near Puerto Varas? THey books all list the ones near Pucon but haven't found any further south.
Thanks

I don't wear any jewelry downtown or in Vaparaiso. Most local women don't. It isn't that it is a hotbed of crime, but things do happen and no one wants to lose their jewelry. I would leave it at home.
The hot springs are closer in to the mountains where the springs emerge. That is why the Pucón area has so many. On the road from Osorno to Argentina there is the Puyehue Hotel spa and springs and the more economical Aguas Calientes, but nothing really near to Puerto Varas which might be easily accessible.

Chile is a relatively safe country for travel, but you should always take the usual precautions you would take almost anywhere, like not walking on dark, side streets late at night and staying out of poor areas when possible..Try to be low profile as much as possible, i.e. definitely do not flaunt your good fortune.

Near Puerto Varas, their are hot springs at Ralun, and Puyehue.
