Crosscheck, isn't it great to hear someone's recommendation confirm your choices? You made my morning. My 18-day cruise has morphed into a 38-day adventure. (I am spending my children's inheritance). Santiago-3 days with a day trip to Valpo; Atacama-4 days; Torres del Paine-3 days with a long travel day to get there. Embark on the cruise from Punta Arenas.
After the cruise which disembarks in Ushuaia, a long travel day, Iguazu-2days; Buenos Aires-4 days.
Thanks so much for the advice on details. Unfortunately, I don't speak Spanish. I always learn a few basic phrases because I think that is the right thing to do. And I am going to be listening to a Spanish app while on my walks until I leave - at least I hope that helps with learning the cadence and pronunciation.
I will absorb your reports as soon as I go refill my coffee cup.

LOL MyBaggage, spend that inheritance!
You won't regret it, Torres del Paine and the Falklands were two of the coolest places I've been..and Antarctica will be fantastic.
I've been to the Peruvian and Bolivian parts of the Atacama Desert, also pretty neat. I love deserts.
It's a bit easier to find English speakers in Chile than in Argentina. If you're worried bring a simple phrase book that works both ways, or a translator app.

Mlgb, your advice and that of others has been most helpful. I cannot imagine planning a trip without the help of Fodors Folks. And the help of Isabel. She is simply perfect. Gracias!
