Hello,

Your welcome! If you're looking for a less touristy Tango show you could aim for a "Milonga" where you can see a show and join in and its where the locals go to dance..! There are plenty of them but I would recommend "la catedral" and only costs about $10 pesos to get in! Its the real "local" venue..!

Have a great time!

rhkkmk,

I have booked rooms at the Plaza Italia B&B, also a wine tour with Javier. Many thanks for that information.

A question about the bus trip. Do all the buses serve dinner and drinks with the highest priced tickets? I have been looking at http://www.omnilineas.com/, which has schedules and rates for all the bus lines. But they don't say anything about dinner.

I believe all bus companies include dinner with their highest priced tickets. For instance, Andesmar clearly says so:

http://www.andesmar.com/shop/View.as...id=143&lang=en

You could get lucky, but I wouldn't expect much more than an airplane dinner.

Have a great time in our country.

Thanks,

It would be a huge surprise if the food were higher than airline quality. But a couple of glasses of wine will help out any dinner. Palatable food and wine for dinner, and hot coffee in the morning is really all I ask.

Well, I have been busy and have come up with the following very fluid itinerary:

March 17, fly to Buenos Aires, arriving 9:00AM March 18.

March 18, Thursday – Check into apartment in San Telmo District. When to check into apartment? Possibly eserve from the 17th, so can check in right away? Afternoon, visit Chique Tango Milonga, Casa Galicia, San Jose 224 (corner of Alsina), Congreso.

March 19, Friday – Take tour of Recoleta Cemetary and city tour. Which tour to take? Want a human guide. Evening, visit Cochabamba 444 milonga in San Telmo.

March 20, Saturday – Visit Plaza Dorrego for Flea Market and Tango Dancers. Saturday evening go to La Milonga de los Consagrados.

March 21, Sunday – Walking tour of Palermo Viejo. Anything special to see?

March 22, Monday – Walking tour of San Telmo. Anything special to see?

March 23, Tuesday – Open – possibly see tango dinner show. Or go to Milonga La Catedral.

March 24, Wednesday – Visit an estancia (overnight?). Estancia Los Dos Hermanos or open to other suggestions.

March 25, Thursday – Fly to Iguazu Falls, stay at Sheraton in the park.

March 26, Friday – Iguazu Falls. Take moonlight walk. Full moon is the 29th, so there will be moonlight walks from March 25.

March 27, Saturday – Fly back to Buenos Aires. Take overnight bus to Mendoza, first class seat.

March 28, Sunday – Arrive Mendoza, check into B&B Plaza Italia. Explore city

March 29, Monday – Mendoza wine tour with Javier, from B&B Plaza Italia.

March 30, Tuesday – Rent car or take tour to mountains.

March 31, Wednesday – take bus back to Buenos Aires for last night.

April 1, Thursday – Fly home. Flight not until evening. What to do on final day?

Restaurants on our list:

BA:
Sottovoce – which location? We are staying in San Telmo.
Las Nazarenas , Reconquista 1132
Restaurant Ligure, Juncal 855
El Sanjuanino (directly in back of the Alvear Palace hotel)
Gran Cafe Tortoni (right on the square in San Telmo_
El Cuartito, Talcahuano, 937

Mendoza:
La Florencia
Tommaso
aZafran
Facundo

I am a bit concerned that we will OD on Tango. So, of the ones on my list, does anyone have suggestions on which should be eliminated first?

Also open to more restaurant recommendations (lover Italian and steak) and additional things to see and do.

I'll comment later, but there are several things I would not recommend or that I would change.

I'm looking forward to your comments -- and any suggested changes. But I realized, after I had posted (we really need an edit feature), I had left out the day trip to Colonia. So will probably fit that in on the 23rd.

OK, we'll see:

I would not stay in the San Telmo area, but it is a metter of taste. I would favor Palermo or Recoleta. I suggest further research on this subject.

About the apartment's check-in time, see what you can arrange with the people who rent it.

The San Telmo feria on Plaza Dorrego takes place on Sundays, not Saturdays. http://www.feriadesantelmo.com/

Sottovoce – which location? The Puerto Madero location is closer, if coming from San Telmo.

Las Nazarenas, Reconquista 1132 - AVOID - See recent thread about it.

Gran Cafe Tortoni is NOT in San Telmo. http://www.cafetortoni.com.ar/

Have a great time in our country.

Avrooster, thanks for your comment, corrections, and suggestions.

Good point about trying to work out a very early check-in rather than just booking it starting a day earlier. I guess it would depend on whether it is rented up until the day I get there.

The flea market -- I knew that from other threads and just spaced. I will switch the Saturday and Sunday itinerary.

Thanks for the correction on Gran Cafe Tortoni. A bad cut and paste job, on my part, from rhkkmk's post above. It should have been:

todo mundo---right on the square in san telmo.

I will definitely look at the thread about Las Nazarenas.

I keep going back and forth about where to stay. I was originally thinking Palermo Soho. But the more I read, the more it seemed like that area was more suited to 20- and 30- year old visitors who are much more into the nightlife / bar scene than "more mature" visitors. But I haven't booked anything yet, other than the Mendoza B&B and wine tour, so back to the drawing board.

avrooster, I did a search and the only reference I found to Las Nazarenas was in rhkkmk's post, and he enjoyed it. I could not find it listed in the restaurant reviews. Could you possibly point me to the thread about it?

It's in a trip report I suggested reading.

http://tinyurl.com/m42vhh

My great friend (in spite of being a TA DE, LOL!) Punta Lugano agrees with me.

Bob (rhkkmk) was probably lucky.

OK, I was doing the search in the Fodors forum, not Tripadvisor. I had read the reviews in TA and there were 3 very good ones and 2 very poor ones. So a 60% success rate isn't good enough for us. And, after reading that trip report and Punta Lugano's comment, we definitely will avoid it.

Thanks.

I agree about Las Nazarenas, we had our very first meal in BA on our first trip there and were extremely disappointed. We like El Mirasol much better.

I also agree about staying in San Telmo, I think Recoleta would be a much better location. We stayed in Palermo once and even though we enjoyed it, it is a very young area (I'm in my 50's, DH just turned 70).

We live in NY and walk everywhere, we found BA to be a very easy walkable city and when we got tired, we'd just hop a cab back to the hotel, which are very reasonable.

Another suggestion, when we went to Mendoza, we stayed in the suburbs and Finca Andalasia, which we also enjoyed. Again, we just prefer to stay in the country when we can, rather than the city. You are also closer to the wineries in this area.

Sounds like you have a great plan, enjoy AR!

Recoleta it is. I will also replace Las Nazarenas with El Mirasol. But I think our dining plans will be very flexible, depending on where we happen to be when we get hungry.

I appreciate the additional suggestion about Mendoza lodging. But I do want to see much of the city, so I think staying right in town would be more convenient, at least for this trip.

My DH and I are currently staying in a lovely apartment in Palermo Botanico. We must be young at heart as we love the area! We are both in
our mid sixties.
San Telmo is fun to visit on Sundays for the market. But, I would want
to stay there. We almost booked accommodation, there. After, we visited
San Telmo, I was so relieved that the experts on Fodor's intervened. I had put forth an inquiry with lots of info to our wants, needs, interests, and age. Most answers suggested Palermo Botanico. The experts were spot on. Especially, Scarlett!
