Best family-friendly destinations/lodging?
Hi
We are a family of four (kids ages 10 and 5) traveling from NYC to Colombia for nine nights in July. We are flying in and out of Cartagena and I'm looking for recomendations on where to go after that. I'm trying to stay away from the backpacker crowd. Looking for moderately upscale places to stay. Places with a nice pool and restaurant and where the operators speak English and can help us plan activities and transportation since we don't speak much Spanish.
Right now I'm very interested in flying to the coffee country area from Cartagena to get a feel for another part of the country and to get relief from the heat. A finca near Salento sounds nice. Does anyone have a recommendation? Also may want to go to the hot springs in Santa Rosa del Cabal and I've heard great things about Los Nevados national park but it seems the one-day tours aren't recommened?
Would this be better than going to Tayrona and Minca? Tayrona looks appealing but the logistics with children seem like they may be hard? We don't want to camp so would need an actual hotel and I'm not sure if the kids would be able to make it to the good swimming beaches on foot (they are good hikers but not sure about in the extreme heat).
I'm open to other suggestions, too. Would prefer rural and smaller towns to the big cities of Bogota and Medellin since we live in a big city. We love rafting, snorkeling, waterfalls and other adventure-type activities. I'm also VERY tempted by Isla Macura but I'm not sure it's worthwhile given the two hour boat trip from Cartagena. I searched for hotels on Playa Grande but they all seem to have mixed reviews and not sure it's worth the price.
Appreciate recommendations! Thx!
