BA in May-things to do, restaurants, shopping

I have found very helpful information on this website. My husband and I (active 60 year olds) will be arriving in BA the beginning of May and heading to Monteveido and Colonia for three overnights. We are trying to stay 1 night at an estancia before returning to BA for 5 nights at the Marriott. I have many questions:

What is the best way to get from EZE to the ferry?
Any recommendation for an estancia to stay one night.
Will we have problems staying at the Marriott on the weekend (I have read about the"pigeons".)
Any recommendations on restaurants, shopping, cultural events etc.

We want to experience as much as possible and plan on taking several tours including the free BA tours. Other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

You mean you are going directly to Colonia from BA after getting off of the plane ?
Best way anywhere from EZE is a Remiss.. the cars that are not taxis .. World Car, VIP are at the airport.. use them, never use a taxi sitting out at the curb. Never. Ever.

So you will take the ferry to Colonia.. stay there for the rest of the day, that night then the bus to Montevideo and there for 2 nights? then the ferry to BA from Montevideo?

Look for the Trip Report by Marnie. She went to a wonderful estancia.

It doesn't matter where you stay and whether it is a week day or weekend, here and there in town, people try different tricks to pickpocket people.
Best thing to do is never have anything in your pockets that anyone can take.

I have lived here for 2 years and have never seen this happen to anyone.

Do you have a good guide book? That will help with restaurants and cultural events.
Time out is good too.

There are a gazillion restaurants here and shopping is plentiful... it is a huge city.
What sort of things are you looking for in restaurants as well as shopping?

Hmmm

Restaurants: Try www.guiaoleo.com for ideas. Guiaoleo is a local list of restaurant reviews and rankings. It is hard to give more specific advice without knowing the kind of food you enjoy.

I have stayed at the Marriott a number of times and never had a problem with bird dropping pickpockets fwiw....petty theft is a fact of life in any large city so it is certainly best to be wary....and follow the advice in Scarlett's post.

Thank you for the information. I have read Marnies trip report and found a lot of good information as well as individual suggestions above. Since I last posted I have arranged 2 nights at the Sheraton Four Points in Monteveido, going there directly from BA, then 1 night in Colonia at the Don Antonio Posada and the last night before returning to BA at the Estancia el Ombu de Areco. Still working on transportation options. I have several guidebooks that I have also been referencing and will take one or 2 with me.

As for restaurants, we like continental style, Italian, Mediterranean and definitely want to try restaurants with Argentinean beef. We do like to shop for local items as well as those items that are good buys and good quality including leather, clothing (age appropriate) and ceramics.

Cultural activities- I could not tell if the Teatre Colon was open or undergoing renovation.

For great Italian: http://www.sottovoceristorante.com.ar/en/sottovoce.php

The Teatro Colón is undergoing renovations and won't open for quite a while.

Have a great time in our town.

Then you will take a Remiss from EZE to the Terminal where the Ferry is for Montevideo. It is a 3 hour ride to Montevideo. You will take a bus from M to Colonia, that is 2 hours (I believe) .. you can be driven from Ombu to BA, I think. Isn't that what Marnie did?

There was just an article this Sunday in the BA Herald about the Colon. After finding that much more serious renovation was needed, things have gotten bogged down and there is no telling when it will ever be open. I certainly don't think it will be next year..

But the concerts and ballets go on, in various venues that are wonderful too.

There are so many good restaurants here, see what your guide books say. We all have our favorites and some have become almost too popular.. La Cabrera for one.. but you should try to eat there, for your steak.
San Telmo and Palermo are full of great places to eat ..
Recoleta has a few too.

Have fun with the planning,

My independent certificated guide Marcelo took me to non-touristy restaurants. He also recommended a superb Italian restaurant in San Telmo when he was with my friend and me. He suggested and my friend and I went to it. ...have forgotten its name, but my friend and I will forever remember the ambience, the service, and the meal itself.

Contact Marcelo at www.ciceroneba.com.ar; read his web information. You might desire to have him guide you on two or more tours. He also might recommend an Estacia.

One person here recommended a cooking lesson; it's in the archives. I plan to do it in October when I hope to return.

For steak Marcelo took us to a restaurant in Palermo ? Gosh-- it was lovely along with the extra sides which were included.
